My car is slower than this
An automatic-equipped Toyota Echo. Why? Because the garden-variety G-body is a malaise-era car that stubbornly soldiered on until 1987.

But with some tuning you should be good to go.
Malaise-era small blocks have super-low compression and contraptions that suck horsepower for emissions standards.
If you live in a place without scary emissions testing, you can nuke the AIR components from orbit, change the carb from your worn-out Rochester to something bigger, update the ignition to an HEI setup if it isn’t already and set up a better air intake system, just for starters. Cat delete and then you’ll really be flying.
Bonus points for some roots-based supercharging since the engine compression is already so low, the supercharging can probably be added for extra vroom.

I’m Planning on doing some supporting mods, then running a stage 2 chip and high-flow cats. That would bring me up to just over 200 horses at the crank. In a 3600-lb car, that will be plenty.

Ditch the emissions crap. Most of it probably doesn’t work anymore. You could keep the cat(s) if they're not clogged up by now. Headers. Swap out heads/Pistons if you can. Or go wild card and add NOS. power when you want/need it.

200 at the crank? Dear lord I need to take you out for a spin in a few “toys” my friends shop has sitting around. In that car I would want all 200 at the wheels, for sure. 900-1100hp burnout machines make you wonder why you ever thought “600hp was enough.”
I would do a new carb, stage 2, lots of suspension, but really do a turbo build. Around town the low power will be suitable, almost comical, but a pull on the highway will embarass anything. Diesel turbos are big, cheap and support plenty of boost. Just make sure you get a good welder for the intake.

There’s your problem :) — Get a real Edelbrock 650 cfm on there or something similar with an electronic choke. More aggressive cam, etc.

If I change the carb, I'll have to change the whole wiring harness, as well as the distributor and choke mechanism. I'll probably go for a remanufactured 750 CFM Quadrajet, just because my uncle is a Quadrajet expert.
