Well, because the small, cheap part that would fix the problem on my Honda won’t be delivered before next week, I had to borrow this to go on a 2000 Km job-hunting round trip. 300k kms on the clock and still as tight as a drum.
The only thing that sucked is that I got diesel on my left hand (forgot that it’s on the other side compared to Japanese cars, had to pull the hose with my left hand, it was soaking wet). Thoroughly scrubbed it twice, still smelt like diesel. Sprayed it with deodorant, still smelt like diesel...
Oh, and before you ask, yes I went to see the comic sans people.

I’m sure that BMW parts are cheaper over there as well.

€ 500 for one E39 headlight? Don’t think so.

I’ve just priced, out of curiosity, a headlight for my FTO.
£504.26.
It’s not just BMW...

So, a 12-15 year old BMW 5-series with 300k kms, between 20-25k km per year. Car has probably been well maintained. My dads 2006 Renault Espace, bought in ‘09 with 28k km is now at 280k, so 42k km each year, including yearly holiday trips to france with three children, dog and half a ton of luggage. Still going strong, if in pretty poor visual condition. Aside from the fact that both Renault and BMW are not known for exceptional reliability, what does this tell us?

Might have something to do with the fact that FTOs were never sold in Europe making spare parts decidedly more difficult to obtain.

Fellow E39 - 170,000 miles and all I’ve replaced (I’ve owned it since 70,000 miles) is a thermostat, alternator, and a window motor. E39s are reliable, contrary to what people hear from their dad’s uncle’s coudon’s neighbor.
After the end of the reliable era (when the E38/39/46 were replaced) is a different story. That’s why I stick with my 5 and haven’t replaced it with a newer one.

Maintenance trumps all. The problem is that early BMW owners tend to take abysmal care of their cars and sell them when that deferred maintenance adds up. Hondas also have crazy expensive parts, but they somehow got a specific subset of the market that takes good care of their cars, so they are rarely time bombs.

It may also help to have one of the last ones of the production run. This one is a 2002 (as in produced/first registered in 2002, Europeans don’t do model years) so it’s the last year.

Nah, Hondas are dumb. E39’s aren’t as bad as people make them out to be. Mostly just cooling system stuff worst of which would be radiators and water pumps. Unless we’re talking M5, that’s a different story entirely.
