So, they make a big deal (and a minifilm) about Petty running his Daytona at Goodwood, then just glance over it? Petty didn’t even drive he thing. Shit. I watched all day for that? It’s not like there weren’t amazing things driven, but I was kinda hoping that this would be more of a spectacle than it was. Poop!

It’s Richard Petty’s car. He payed for the restoration, he did actually drive it, and he’s 77 years old. There’s not 5 of them, there’s not 3, there’s not even 2, there’s 1. Built and restored by the man himself. He even said something at the end of his run in an interview to the tune of (paraphrasing) “I think these drivers would treat the cars differently if they were they owners”, jokingly, but I think he made his point. Besides that, Petty’s not even worth a fraction of the majority of owners at Goodwood. The climb at Goodwood is way more difficult than anybody anticipates, even for pro drivers. There were several crashes today and yesterday, and will be more tomorrow. I can’t imagine what that sort of loss would have meant to Petty if he had crashed it, not to mention the fact that a crash probably would have killed him.

For the record, I would have loved to see someone drive the car like hell, just like I would have liked to see Stirling Moss drive the hell out of the 722 Merc, but sometimes, you just have to appreciate that they made the effort to be there.

After going back and checking up several times, I read that he did drive the car. I don’t know what part I was watching when they only showed a quick shot of it and named someone else as the driver. I wasn’t worried about him driving the hell out it, I just wanted to see him drive it, period.

It’s def possible they did two runs, one on Friday and one on Sat, maybe he only drove one of those times?
