My dad’s birthday is coming up. Kind of a big one, he’s decided to fully retire. He has no personality, no sense of humor, and no hobbies. He enjoys watching Hallmark movies and drives a Buick. He doesn’t drink or smoke. I got him a wheelbarrow last year.

If you are looking for automotive-related gifts, you should check into the NASCAR experience or Rally School or any number of racing-related events. Find something cool to do, not just an object that will sit on a shelf (or around his neck). You might spark an interest that leads to a hobby, a personality, a smile on his face....

He must be interested in something .

Get him a book on that subject? Look at the books he has on his shelf, perhaps? Or if he’s recently retired, maybe get a him a book about his particular industry?

Some men - some fathers - are so opaque they can be difficult to get gifts for.

Course, you could just ask him. He’d probably say, “Nothing” but if you press him, you may get some kind of answer.

At the very least, you could take him out for a steak dinner, or whatever his favorite meal is.

In the business world, a nice bottle of alcohol is a traditional gift when you have no clue as to what they might like. Even if they don’t like it, it’s useful to offer guests.

Does your dad have a favorite spirit of choice? Maybe a bottle of that?

If not that, maybe something like a recliner so he can relax in his retirement?

How about doing something together? A track day. A day at a sailing school. Sure wish I could have done those things with my dad.

If he had a sense of humor I would say a strap on and tell him to google “pegging”

But, since he doesn't, a nice watch, maybe a pocket watch. Or a nice pocket knife.

Fishing gear. Anything to get his ass out of the house. My dad retired recently, and he is bored out of his goddamn mind.

There must be something - feel him out. At least hike a trail, pitch a tent, light a campfire. Cook something unhealthy.
