American Airlines has completed application of its new (as of 2013) livery to nearly half of the carrier’s fleet, according to the most recent issue of its weekly newsletter, Arrivals .

Of note, all of the carrier’s widebody aircraft now feature the new livery, which means that you won’t be seeing any of these anymore:

While the old polished metal look is quickly going the way of TWA and Pan Am, it will still be a few years before it’s totally gone, as completion of the 737 fleet is expected to take until late 2017.
Also, aircraft heading for retirement will not be repainted. This includes the venerable MD-80 family as it nears complete retirement from the American fleet in 2017.

I don’t care much for the new AA livery, particularly because the old one photographed so well. The new one is just sort of blah.

Yeah, I’ll miss the polished aluminum. I do have to admit that the new paint makes the planes look a little more clean and cohesive since everything can be the same color.

From a strictly aesthetic view, I don’t like how the stripes continue onto the fuselage. And the rest of it is just.....boring. I’m particularly fond of the retro Astrojet livery.

Bets on the MD90s (at the very least) going to Delta?

I think Delta is on a mission to own every MD-90 on earth, with the possible exception of the Saudi Arabian Airlines examples with the MD-11 avionics...which, now that I think about it, might be similar to the avionics system in the Airtran 717s they took over the lease on. So yeah, the AA MD-90s will probably wind up with Delta.
The MD-80/82/83/87s will probably wind up as part sources to keep the -88s and -90s flying.
