And of course it looks great until you get to the performance section.

This IS, with 241 hp and 258 lb.ft of torque, can only muster a 0-60 mph time of 7 seconds. A BMW 328i, with a 2 liter turbo-4 like the Lexus, producing the same amount of power and torque as the Lexus, does 0-60 in 5.6 seconds.

And it’s likely that this 328i will get better gas mileage than this IS.

Where did Lexus go wrong???

how much do they both weigh? I’m assuming the Lexus is carrying around bricks

Lexus really hit it out the park looks wise with this car but for some ungodly reason can't land a good base powertrain for it... IT NEEEDS to be right on par with the benchmark player, the BMW.

The IS is a pretty heavy vehicle, isn’t it?

That’s pretty bad. My car, 15 years old, with 227hp/217tq will do 0-60 in 7.3 seconds. Wow.

I mean, the IS250 did it in 7.7s, so I’d say that’s an improvement. Never mind it’s still slower than the base 320i.

BMW is notorious for underrating their engines, especially their turbo engines.

I cross shopped used IS250s with used 3.0L CTSs for my new commuter...even the 3900 pound behemoth gets to 60 in 7.1s with the base engine. The CTS was a better car in every aspect other than looks, which are subjective, and perceived reliability. I ended up with the susubstantially cheaper car.

Gearing and throttle response are probably woeful. Not sure how much both weigh, but I wouldn’t want to own the BMW beyond my lease.

The Lexus will be fine up to and beyond 100k.

I used to have a IS250 with the manual. Slow as molasses. I figured this engine would be a huge improvement when it came out, but in stock form I guess it’s still slow. But since it’s turbo, I’m sure some great tunes won’t be too far behind.

2014 IS250, RWD: 3461 lbs

2014 328i RWD: 3480 lbs

So the Lexus engine is just really crap then.

See, the thing is that they’ve made an excellent car. Smooth, quiet, and sporty at the same time. But people who shop in this segment buy cars based on numbers. The number of features. The performance numbers. They don’t buy by feel. The IS feels more fun to drive than the BMW, but because people buy by numbers, they don’t give the 250 a chance.

Lexus can’t actually make a good, quick-shifting gearbox, so that’s probably why.

That is the selling point of the 200t, probably.

That’s very true, but people who buy these cars aren’t likely to be enthusiasts and won’t know that, so they’ll pick the BMW because it appears to be more efficient in using the power.

Apparently it weighs the same as a 328i. The RC coupe, now that’s heavy.

Of course! Not just in speed, but in total mileage as well. Just hit 256,000 yesterday.

Tuning is always an option, however as of right now, the NX 200t with the same engine has very little tunes available. Perhaps with the IS there’ll be more.

Wow, is the 328 that heavy? I thought the IS was the heaviest in that class.

Guess I’ve just gotten used to everything weighing as little as the ATS.

This is just what I was about to say. BMW is lying about how much power their car is producing. I’m not sure why they always underrate their cars like that.

Kinja'd!!! Cixelsyd > Sneaky Pete

“Perceived” because it is true. I’ve had an IS250 for coming up on 65k miles so far and the only unscheduled maintenance in the car’s entire life was a leaking water pump 5,000 miles ago, which Lexus picked up for free even though it was out of warranty.

Modern Cadillacs are relatively problem free as well. They’re regularly ranked just below Lexus in reliability rankings, unlike the other luxury brands.

Oh yeah, I wasn’t knocking Lexus reliability at all, more pointing out that most perceive Cadillac as just more unreliable GM junk (as I did until I saw data that indicated they were just behind Lexus).

The RC F seems to work fairly well. When they do a performance shift program it works best. Their normal programming is much too focused on economy. And the hybrids are even worse.
