Almost as bad as texting while driving is appointing yourself the enforcer of speed limits on interstate highways.

Kinja'd!!!

The commute to work this morning was slowed by approximately 15% due to some shitstain in a 370z Convertible with a 30-day tag.

So obeying the speed limit is bad?

I know its wrong and I certainly shouldn’t do it, but here we go. Sometimes when I'm getting truly fed up about a slow person in the fast lane, I will purposefully back off, then accelerate behind them stopping at tailgating distance. I may have to do this a couple of times. But it always works, even better than flashing my headlights. Something about a 3 ton truck coming up behind someone makes them want to move. Who would've figured?

THIS. This is one of my biggest gripes about most American drivers. If you are A.) riding in the left lane and I am approaching on you at a higher rate of speed.. move over, if im flashing my lights its not a road rage move it's a courtesy to let you know I am moving at a higher rate of speed B.) If I pass you and return to the lane do not flash your lights/honk in anger at me or re-pass me. C.) Lets just stress again, If the sign on the motorway says “SLOWER TRAFFIC USE RIGHT LANES” and you are at or below the posted speed... STAY ON THE RIGHT.

Only if you disregard traffic laws (keep right except to pass) and disrupt traffic flow while doing so.

If the speed limit is improperly set, most people will ignore it. If you then obey that limit, you are in more danger than if you just went with traffic flow. If you sit in the right hand lane, OK. Obstructing the passing lane just promotes aggressive driving by others, which I’m sure I don’t really need to point out is more dangerous again. Georgia has a good rule (I found out yesterday). It isn’t illegal to pass on the right, it’s illegal to be passed on the right.

tl;dr

if the limit is unreasonable, yes obeying it is bad

On another note (this seemed like a good place to put it), when I come up to someone travelling slower than me, at a reasonable distance I begin to coast down to their speed. IF I REACH AND/OR EXCEED TAILGATING DISTANCE AND HAVE TO BRAKE, YOU ARE GOING TOO F*CKING SLOW.

Brake lights have no business on a highway unless an accident is involved.

Okay, I’ll bite. As the possessor of a car (well, several cars) of a chronically underpowered nature, it comes to me in hilly country to *absolutely* need the ability to overtake when I can, in the interests of maintaining momentum. Sometimes an extra 4-5mph over the speed limit coming down a hill makes all the difference in the world as to whether I am able to be anywhere near the speed limit coming up the next. I might even be passing *at* the speed limit by choice, but the congestion caused by somebody holding up the line in the left lane, increasing the overall density of the pack of cars, and people braking, lane-changing, and manuevering will make that utterly impossible.

If I miss my shot, it might mean 10mph of difference, and a cascading shock of under-speed shifts all along the right-hand lane. This is dangerous and promotes risk to other drivers far more than several mph over the limit. This is also very much the case for any kind of heavy truck or vehicle other than the absolute newest, and maintaining an invariant speed is even worse for mileage. Expecting people to be within a band of the speed limit is one thing, taking it upon yourself to slow people down to a speed that your car can maintain consistently and others can’t, causing emfuckening of the pattern of traffic for miles behind you - that, that is sheer self-absorbed dickery.

Sorry, image didn’t load so I was confused. I see it now.

Also, I have a permit. I’m not losing my permit or possibly the ability to get a license, so I drive in the right or middle lane at the speed limit or 5 over. No way I’m driving any higher than that. Hope you understand.

Yes, and the people who make the ‘Worst drivers of....’ videos (with all their driving in blind spots/charging intersections/waiting till the last moment to brake then laying on the horn) are the digital equivalents of the vigilante speed enforcers.

I hate people who ride the left lane! Try going up the New York Thruway on a weekend with all the New Jersey dumbasses on it. I usually have to flash my lights 10 times before they move over!

I had this happen yesterday. The guy was an absolute psychopath. I passed him on the right and continue on my merry way. He did not like this because ‘luxury car’ and then decided to tail gate me. If I even breathed on the brake pedal he would have totaled both of us. after about a half of mile I attempt to move over because honestly it just isn’t worth him causing a wreck. He decides he wants to do the same when I’m over halfway into the right lane. He then pushes to the off ramp lane to pass me almost hitting me by re-entering into the lane I’ve committed to. after he passes me he brake checks me and gives me the finger.

I plan on sending it to the state troopers in hopefully getting this idiot off the road.

Why is it that some states follow the rule of only using the left lane to pass. Is it a law or just something people know to do? I live in NY so people drive what ever speed they want in whatever lane they want. And people also pass on the right all the time.

I deal with this in my evening commute almost daily. Or the people that drive somewhere between 55 and 80. They get all pisssy when people pass them and then speed up. But within 5 minutes they’re back to being slow again. While it’s not right, I have been known to get back into the left lane just after I pass them, leaving less space then one should. That usually wakes people up and they move over.

Some states have the law, some states don’t. Also, just because some states have the law doesn’t mean it’s followed, see New Jersey.

I hate to admit it but I pass on the right more often than I should ...

My issue is I’m in Florida and the left lane is clogged with some 80 something year old in her Buick or Cadillac who can barely see over the steering wheel doing 20 under with her left blinker on for the past 3 miles
