And this, kids, is why signaling when on a bike is important. Heading down a country dirt road and I come up behind a guy on a Ninja going a bit slow. After following him for a little ways he pulled over to the right side of the road and slowed down. I begin to pass on the left, and as I get alongside him he crosses the road and attempts entry into a driveway on the left. My civic, being rather large and rather solid, did an effective job of stopping him. He was unharmed, as was the passenger sitting in my car behind the door that he hit. We exchanged insurance info, and I assured him that I wouldn’t be filing a claim since the damage to my car wasn’t really worth fixing and, honestly, I sympathized with him and didn’t want his insurance costs to skyrocket. I wasn’t going to be home for quite a few hours anyways to file a claim even if I wanted to.

An hour later I got a new claim notice email on my phone from Progressive.

So now I’m filing a claim against him.

Pre-emptive answer to “why didn’t you call the cops”: middle of nowhere on a country road in 100+ degrees with no shade and an accident that I considered minor. His bike suffered only a slightly tweaked shifter pedal and some very minor edge scrapes on the fairings.

So now I have all of this shit to deal with. yaaaaaaaaay.

Sorry bro but you got, got. If you weren’t going to file a claim no reason to exchange info but since you did you left the door wide open for him to file against you.

Same thing happened to my neighbors dad except he handed the person $500 in cash to fix the bumper instead of going through insurance and the person filed a claim the next day against him and pocketed the money.

Being nice pays off so well. Sorry about it. Always file a claim, and as fast as you can.

Well, I just filed a claim against him and, unlike him, I have two witnesses who were in the car with me.

I literally just got into a position where I could. I haven’t had computer access all day.

Well hopefully it works out. A little scuff like that will be 1k to fix, so hopefully you end up with a few bucks and a dent.

I’m selling the car in 7 days.

Also re: should not have exchanged information

nobody teaches this shit.

This is the second time someone else has hit one of my vehicles and I still have no idea what the fuck to do .

“Call your insurance company” don’t have many minutes, had no signal

“call the cops” fuck no. 100 degrees out and no AC

So I checked with insurance as soon as I was able to but he beat me to it.

This is where we need Tom McParland. Hope I got the name right. The three times I’ve been hit I call asap, don’t admit fault to the person who hit me, and wait for a check.

Jealous. In my position, a $1k check would go a damn long ways towards paying off some parent debt.

Take it for the insurance inspection...they’ll give you a price. Then say I’ll have someone else deal with it. Then you get a check minus deductible. My Kia paid itself off with a couple minor dents.

Yeah, I’m supposed to have someone from Progressive call me at work tomorrow, so I’ll see how that conversation goes.

Wait, so this dude hit you after not signaling and is now filing a claim against you?! What a douche. My car got hit about a year and a half ago. I got the guy’s insurance info and he immediately asked for mine. I was completely not in the wrong so didn’t give it to him. He threatened to call the police so I told him to nut up and do it. I knew that he was going to try to pin it on me even though other people saw him scrape the shit outta my car. For future reference, if somebody hits you, don’t give out your info! Also, if there are any witnesses, get their input and hang around if the police happen to show up.

The witnesses were my friends riding in the car, so I’m not sure how valid their opinion of the matter is... I was always told to just ‘exchange’ insurance info but nobody makes it clear what the fuck to do in various situations so every time this shit happens I’m left getting screwed.

The same sort of situation happened with my mother. She was sitting at a light and someone idled into her brand new A5, imprinting their license plate on the rear bumper. The driver (who just had foot surgery) admitted she shouldn’t be driving . However, Geico tried to turn this on my mother saying it was her fault. My sister (who happened to be in the passenger seat) could not be used at a witness because she was in the car, making her somewhat biased.

With must the facts presented (motorcyclist on your right making a left turn) sounds like it was his fault, period. An insurance claim against him is what my dad calls a “buffoon tax”; you may not get a lot out of it, but he’ll have to pay to fix his bike and his insurance will likely go up. At least he wasn’t hurt, because medical bills, especially for those like pedestrians and cyclists who don’t have a metal and glass shell around them, get expensive quickly.

An old housemate minorly rear-ended someone, the guy demanded $500 or he’d file a claim against her insurance. She got him to agree to the $175 she had in cash back at the house, so he followed her back and she gave it to him(at this point I and our other 6’+ housemate came out to make sure he didn’t mess with her). The guy then demanded her insurance info “In case the money don’t cover the damage.” She told him they’d agreed to settle for $175 and he needed to either give the money back or fuck off. He threatened to call the cops, and she responded by calling them on her phone and handing the phone to the guy.

Cop shows up, guy starts raving about how she hit him and refuses to give her insurance info. Cop asks for her side and she tells him about the $175. Cop looks at the guy and says “Let me get this straight, you already got the money you agreed to from her, you drove to her house so you’re not at the accident scene anymore, and you now want me to make her give you her insurance info so you can file a claim? Get the fuck out of here before I arrest you for trying to extort her!” Guy slunk away immediately after that.
