My family and I going to Maui in about a month, for 10 days. We are trying to plan out what we want to do there. So: for the opponaughts that have been to Maui, what are some things that you enjoyed during your visit?

You are an OPPO, that means you have to hit the road to Hana.

Dude, I just went like a few weeks ago for the first time. You have to do the Jurassic Park helicopter tour. It’s awesome. Also, if you’re into ocean stuff, there’s an absolutely incredible spearfishing charters outfit called TopShot. Like one of the most fun days I’ve ever had. There’s also a really good fishing outfit. Here: http://www.mauiprivateboatcharters.com/ . You also have to eat at Teppanyaki on the go if you’re staying near Kaanapali. And Prison Street Pizza if you’re around Lahaina. Good places to get away from the touristy shit for a minute.

Snorkel, snorkel, snorkel. Honestly I didn’t like driving the road to Hana that much since the bridges are single lane and you have to be on the constant lookout for both slow tourists and locals zooming up behind you. It’s beautiful, though, and if you can spend a night or two in Hana it’s definitely worth it. Also worth it is a trip to Lanai. For the snorkeling.

If you’re a morning person, get up and drive up Mt. Haleakala to watch a sunrise. There’s also tubing through an old sugar cane plantation

Yep! We are definitely going to see a sunrise. I think the tubing through the sugar cane plantation is on Kauai, unfortunately. :-(

Damn I think you’re right! I visited both island on my honeymoon a few years ago, it’s all kind of blurred together lol
The sunrise was unreal. Just stay on the footpaths so the angry tour guide lady doesn’t yell at you!

Also, you have to go to Maui Brewing. They have beer there.

I went to Maui for a week. Met up with a girl. Didn’t see any of Maui.
Sorry I’m no help.

I would recommend biking down Haleakala. Did that after watching the sunrise, it was the highlight of the trip for us. Think it’s ~20 miles or so, and if you keep your momentum up, you won’t pedal until the last mile. Research Hana if you’re serious about it - I really wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re a passenger. Though the views are spectacular, the traffic is a nightmare. Have dinner at Mama's Fish House, too - -

Another reinforcing comment for Haleakala. We spent a week at a little place on the east side of the island. Bring a lot of food and beer with you, opportunities for groceries are very few outside of the west-side coast towns. There are lots of hidden beaches and little coves on the east side of the island that are seriously amazing. Also, Charles Lindbergh’s grave is in Kipahalu, on the Hana highway. And some truly amazing hikes across lava cliffs.

I’ve been on Maui for a few years. Glad to see you are planning the road to Hana. Before you head out get directions to the bamboo hike, black sand beach and red sand beach.
If you are game for some advice don’t try to make the road to Hana a Hawaiian Tail of the Dragon. Locals can do the 50 miles in 75 minutes, but you can’t and shouldn’t. Pull over often and take two days if you have to (seriously, camp in Oheo). No matter what you rented that 92 Civic DX in your mirror can and will pass you. Every visitor who tries to take that road fast ends up miserable and missing the point.
I also like renting a Jeep on Lanai (spendy), Snorkeling (Honolua Bay or pay to go to Molokini), and Sunrise on Haleakala followed by breakfast at Kula Lodge. There’s more, but that is plenty for 10 days.
