Oppos. At a repair shop, turns out that a recent Tulsa pothole damaged my front passenger side wheel bearing. How difficult is it to replace? In terms of my repair skills, I’d say I’m intermediate. I do a lot of things my self like brakes and such. Do I stand a chance? What tools would I need?

Depends, is it front wheel drive?

Rear wheel drive.

Might need a press or similar for fitment of bearing.

A lot of wheel bearings *are* easy to replace. Some aren’t. It varies widely - even on the same car, because the “proper” way to replace a wheel bearing if it’s got a tapered roller bearing is to get the bearing *and* its race out, and sometimes they don’t come in an out without the help of things like a press. Some cars have ball bearings that are set up in such a way you have to use hub pullers and all kinds of wacky things to remove them. Some can be done in about an hour all in. It all depends.

Probably easy. You’ll need to replace the whole hub.

Took me about 40 min to do mine.

Back after doing some research and snooping your post history, if it’s a Genesis it’ll be like this:

No disassembly involved, but a good bit of expense. Without disassembly, you can totally do this.

Thanks. I’m a little cautious replacing it my self. I’ll have to consult the shop manual later. I’m hoping is easy!

Thanks! Knowing my luck, Hyundai will probably be different and weird just in bearings alone.

It should be pretty much:

Take off wheel

Remove brakes (rotor, probably two bolts on caliper)

Disconnect electrics

Remove four bolts

Swap, reverse the process.

So, about an hour if you’re quick. Metric wrench/socket sets, maybe a screwdriver for loosening things, prying, and poking.

I inspected the rotor yesterday before taking it in. They confirmed what I thought. I got everything off except the rotor. The freaking retaining screws need a PB blaster treatment.

Manual impact driver. Get one, and get it now. A more useful tool for any kind of screw removal you cannot possibly imagine.

The Phillips head interface would be among the most obnoxious things ever, were it not for the fact that an impact driver dominates it in every way. Press in for more positive torque lock... WITH A HAMMER
