Note To Self: Never drive a classic on the hottest day of the year.

I woke up yesterday and said to myself, “it’s going to be HOT (97 degrees). I’m not a pansy so I’ll drive my classic pickup with no AC”. I planned on sweating, but I never planned on it dying at a busy intersection at the hottest time of day. I called roadside assistance who informed me it would be over an hour before a tow truck could get there. Turns out a lot of cars were overheating yesterday and the tow companies were all slammed. So I abandoned the truck after turning the hazards on, and made my way to the sidewalk. I sat roasting in the sun waiting for my rescue, and watching something quite comical. DOZENS of people would pull up behind the truck, flail their arms, blow the horn, yell obscenities, sometimes for MINUTES before finally pulling around into the other lane and leaving. Did I mention THE HAZARDS WERE ON? Not to mention one could clearly see there was no one IN the truck (had they looked up). Single cab, no window tint, big back window. Some even would stop alongside to give dirty looks and hand gestures only to realize there was no one there to receive them. Eventually after much sunburnt, and dehydration the tow truck loaded it up and gave me a ride home. Moral of the story... people are idiots and don’t gamble with your classic on hot days. You could be stranded for a while so at the very least take some water. I still don’t know what is wrong with it. It restarted once I got home only to die again 2 mins later. Thankfully 2 mins was all I needed to get in the garage.

I’ve gotten stranded in a classic before. It is what it is.Then again, mine’s not really an oven.

Yeah, sounds familiar. When I lived in Texas in the 90’s my dad had a C10 as his primary vehicle. This kind of thing happened a couple times. Generally it was just hot as hell.

Only 97? Try California in the middle of summer. I shit you not, I was sweating even though my AC was on its coldest setting.

Shit dude, my old car is the most reliable one I own. Also a convertible, and therefore awesome for hot days.

Meh, I have driven my Lada Samara at 38°C+(101F) in heavy traffic, so you got nothing on me. Given the Lada was white so it was a little mor bearable, but even 4 windows down it was a sweatshop.

Sucks. Didn't get stranded but I did have to dd my truck (1979) without functioning AC during a record setting heat wave for a couple months.

Carb heat soak maybe?

The only problem I have is hard starting due to carbs/vaporlock (though I’ve had it worse on other carb’d cars). The old SAAB runs hot if stuck in traffic, but I haven’t had it actually overheat yet.

I think my worse experience was getting stuck in construction traffic in the mojave desert in a 1982 Toyota without AC. I eventually just took a crazy rural highway off of the main road to keep moving.

This one has been pretty flawless the last 4 years. Other than needing a jump once because of a dead battery it’s never let me down. Things fail at extreme temperatures most of the time though.

That’s what I thought intially because I was stuck in stopped traffic for 10 mins before it died. Even after several hours in the garage it won’t stay running for longer than a couple of minutes. I bought a new coil today because they tend to malfunction after being subjected to a lot of heat from what I’ve read.

How is the coil mounted?

The ONE THING my ‘77 Firebird never did to me was overheat or vapor lock. Guess I was lucky, it does get into the 90’s here sometimes.

Vertical, but mounts to the engine block which isn’t ideal.

What kind of distributor?

Stock Ford points distributor, for a 289. I looked at the points, and they still look new. Condensor may be my next part if the coil doesn’t correct it.

Fair enough. I also have an M3, though mine is an e46. And that has left me stranded more often than my old Porsche.

Yeah, I DDed an old car for a while. Sitting in summer heat with your heater blasting in order to keep the engine cool is not fun.

I had an E46 before the E92. Other than a clutch slave cylinder, and an o-ring on the coolant temperature sensor those was the only 2 problems I had with it. I still miss that car.

Shit happens when you drive old cars. Old stuff breaks sometimes. CCC taught me this, but to appreciate it for the most part. Trust me, I had plenty of ass-sweat-glued-to-the-seat days in classics in and around NYC while I worked there.

Yes shit does happen. I mostly just wasn’t prepared. No water, no tools. I had a phillips screwdriver and that was it. I will make a small toolkit, and carry a bottle of water at all times from now on.

It’s been awesome for me man. I thought hard about the e90s, but I’ve got a Corvette for my V8 kicks, so I wanted something a little more balanced. Mine’s actually been awesome too. I guess with the way I drive, shit built for racing holds up better than shit built for normal people. But it did strand me once in a horrible spot. Many hundreds of people were very upset with me. Turned out to just be some kind of relay for the transmission. $50 fix.

SMG relay? I carried a new spare in the glovebox per forum recommendation. Never had to use it though. The E46 is just the right size. The E9X maybe slightly faster around a track, but the E46 is a better drivers car.

I don’t know man. I don’t pretend to understand that sorcery. I have a buddy who’s a BMW mechanic, and he pretty much just tells me how much I owe him.

Damn, what truck do you have? I drove my ‘66 GMC every day last week. 115-117F every day. I drove my corvair one of those days and it did now handle traffic as well after about an hour.

Nice. Mines a ‘66 GMC but it has a 350 swap with a crate engine of an unknown age.

Very cool! The 51 has a 289 from a 60’s Fairlane. My 66 still has the original I6. I think I’ve solved the problem. There was a loose wire on the ignition switch.
