This guy stood near a stop sign and light that people routinely roll through. His sign, which happened to be made out of the top of a Rubbermaid box, said “Cops Ahead! Stop at signs and light.”
The Seattle police said they didn’t ticket him for holding up the sign they ticketed him for the “Stop at signs and light,” part. As this is giving instructions to other drivers. Essentially making his own road sign. They gave him his ticket, he crossed out the bottom of the sign and plans to continue holding it up.
He plans to fight the ticket, I guess on the grounds that his sign doesn’t look like a street sign.
The headline from the news website says “speed trap” but, it doesn’t sound like it was. It just sounds like they were ticketing people for rolling the sign.

That’s a bit of a bullshit ticket. Thing is, he shouldn’t have had to tell people. I lived directly on an intersection growing up, and we’d occasionally call the cops and let them know people were running the sign. They’d come, we’d pop some popcorn, and we’d watch people get tickets. Good fun.

Ya, it is a shitty ticket. I am thinking the same way people shouldn’t be running the sign at all. If it was a speed trap I would fully support him but, it’s not.

They have to collect revenue someway. If not from the drivers, from the person warning the drivers

I thought the same thing when I first saw it, rent and cost of living in Seattle are pretty high. Doesn’t he have a job or something? Maybe he does it in his free time?

IMO, this isn’t revenue collecting. If it was a speed trap, I fully support the dude but it’s not. It’s a stop sign that people are running. That to me should be enforced by the police.

I agree and it sounds like they ticketed him because he was preventing them from the ticket revenue. The fact that there were cops there shouldn’t be an issue. I would rather have people stop at the sign because they think they’re being watched than roll through it and maybe get a ticket.
Personally in highly populated areas I wouldn’t hate signs that warn people of non-existant or fake traffic cameras. All you have to do is put in a couple real ones and signs around those as well and drivers will think they’re all real. Word of the people actually being ticketed would be enough to get people driving safer in neighborhoods.

I want to hate the cops in this I really do but, people are running a stop sign, it’s not a speed trap. If it was a speed trap I would fully support this dude.

I support people treating stop signs as a yield signs when no one is around. If I roll up to a 4 way stop and no cars, people on bikes or on foot (basically no risk to anyone at all) are around I should be allowed to roll through it at 2-3 mph without risking a jihad against my wallet from the police.

That ticket makes no sense. He wasn’t advocating illegal activities he was literally telling the drivers to obey the law, lmao. Ridiculous.

but him holding the sign is (presumably) helping motorists follow the law and be safe which should the goal of traffic enforcement.
Instead they punish him for making the road safer. Why?

Thing is, I hear about traffic cameras actually causing accidents, such as people slamming on the brakes if the light turns yellow so that there’s no way to get a ticket for running a red. So [citation needed] on those actually doing anything. And another issue is, what about people who don’t live in the neighbourhood cruising through? Word of mouth wouldn’t affect them.
People could just not be assholes, too. I don’t understand why people need to be directly observed in order to follow the law. Then again, if we go with classical thought that people are naturally free-thinking and hedonistic, then it makes sense, but still, don’t be a dick.

... then why even bother calling it a stop sign? What’s the point in having those sorts of rules if there’s an exception to it? And suppose a stop sign is on a corner with a hefty blind spot (hedges or something). Two people both pull up and think there isn’t another vehicle coming. Both enter. Both hit each other. What then?

The purpose is to stop when other vehicles or people are at the intersection so everyone can proceed safely. But when it can be deteremined that without a doubt, 100% assurance that there is no danger in not coming to a complete stop, then you sould be allowed to proceed through at a low relative speed such as 2-3 mph

Just have small signs underneath stop signs and speed limits that say “The Town of [Blank] Enforces Traffic Laws via Traffic Cameras”. I agree with you that people shouldn’t have to be watched, but unfortunately this is the world we live in. As far as the people driving through, they’re going to roll through stops anyways and it would make up the ticket revenue lost by the town people not driving like assholes.

Just as an aside, how the hell would a traffic camera work at a stop sign? How does one know that they’ve stopped long enough to not get ticketed?
Also, I’m not in this for the ticket revenue. I’m in this for deterring people from running stop signs and possibly running people over/hitting other vehicles.

I do and don’t agree with you, I roll most stop signs if there isn’t a reason for me to stop but, the average person (cell phone in one hand, coffee in the other, Seattle driver) driving through here day after day will get into the habit of running the sign. Then, one day there is a pedestrian in the road, that they don’t stop and hit someone.
Unfortunately, roads have to be designed to the lowest common denominator which is usually shitty drivers, driving like shit, and unaware that they are piloting a 4000 pound vehicle capable of killing and seriously injuring others.
The average person doesn’t take driving nearly as seriously as enthusiasts like most Oppo’s. Those are the people that need to be reminded of the law and what they are doing.

I agree with that and I have no problem with the cops being at that intersection. the problem arises when they punish someone for supporting their stated goal, road safety.

That one, I agree with. Slight California stops should be alright if there’s no one there.

Stop signs establish right of way, but there is no safety benefit to stopping if nobody else is coming. I’m not talking about ignoring it completely, but slowing down, looking around making sure sure nobody’s coming or it’s your turn, then proceeding. Your tires don’t have to stop completely to make an intersection safe, but they do have to stop completely to avoid a ticket.

So California stops, then? I agree with you, it’s just the legalese would be difficult in order to get right.
Also, maybe have hedges banned at intersections in order to improve sight lines in order to make sure that it’s clear.

I mean, you shouldn’t go if you can’t see it’s clear. It’s just that blanket statements like “you need to stop at all stop signs or it’s unsafe” isn’t exactly true. There are many stop signs where coming to a complete stop nets no safety benefit at all, but legally you’re required to. We have eyes and a brain, we should be allowed to use them to asses individual scenarios as they come up. I think this guy was just trying to prevent the people who roll the stop signs (not sure about the light part, maybe right turns or yellows?) from getting tickets “unjustly”.

I’ve just noticed that where you’re required to stop in an intersection, sometimes the sight lines get blocked, either by the line being too far back, illegally parked cars, or plant life. I’d really like to see that stuff fixed so I don’t have to start creeping into the intersection.
Yeah, I agree with that, but cops are also going to use some discretion when giving tickets. Where this happened was quite literally right beside a school, so you could expect them for being more strict there.

I hear what you are saying. We need Oppo only lanes.
On a serious note I think this is why the US needs to start requiring mandatory driver retesting every time you renew your license. And one part of that test should be for the driver to put their cell phone in the cup holder volume on high, and the instructor randomly texting/calling it during the test. Your hand touches the phone once you fail and have to retake.

Seattle? Like the Seattle Circuit in Gran Turismo? He would need to use that sign then. Those roads make you catch air!
