I think the F-type looks worse every time I see it, especially driving on the street.

Kinja'd!!!

This coming from someone that wanted a Jag ever since toddlerhood but didn’t know what a BMW was until middle school.

It’s kinda like the original Mercedes CLS: it looked great at first and then time took its toll, and now the styling looks a bit dated.

I dislike the two slashes the made ln the sides of the grill. To me they look pointless and it would make the car look much more elegant if they were filled.

I don’t think it’s a bad looking car by any means; in fact, I think it’s beautiful. When it first came out, I could barely keep my eyes off it. That being said, it just doesn’t do much for me anymore. At this point, I’m not sure that any car really does anything for me anymore.

That’s exactly how I feel! Not to say it looks bad, it just stirs my soul less and less. The R8 always impresses me in person though no matter the year. I actually like it more and more every time I see it.

It tends to happen when the things you like just for the sake of liking them get turned into a massive, borderline cultic culture. What was once enjoyable on your own becomes shoved in your face as an entire subculture of life tries to shove it back in your face, create “trends” of what is and isn’t cool, and develop surgically precise definitions of what “enthusiasts” are.

I like cars. All kinds of cars. Big cars, little cars. Red cars, blue cars. And - sometimes - a car just for the curve of its hood.

Apparently, that seems to be less and less acceptable these days. Automotive enthusiasm has “evolved” (or, as I believe to be more appropriate, “devolved”) into “Automotive Culture,” with all of its paradoxical little cliques. Think “MIATAZ FOR LYFE, BRO!” or “AUTOMATICS ARE FOR FAGZ” or “THIS BRAND OF CARS IS BEIGE” and bullshit like that. People who like a car, no matter what the car, just because they do aren’t allowed any more. They have to have a legitimate, “sophisticated” reason for liking them; if they don’t, they’re looked down upon. I’ve seen it happen many times, even as recently as yesterday. Walking home, a guy parked his brand new M4 on the street. An older woman walking her dog told him she liked his car, and he asked her why. The woman replied that she just liked it, and the guy responded by implying that if she didn’t know why she liked it, she must not know anything about cars - and then proceeded to walk away.

And before you crack the remark that it was just a douchebag BMW owner with a brand new M4, I’ve seen it happen with all kinds of people and all kinds of cars.

Or there’s one of my other favorites: “Why did you buy that Kia when you could have had some other brand instead?”

Why is this shit necessary? Really, why?

It’s a shitty attitude that has become more and more pervasive everywhere you look in “automotive culture” these days. From buyers to analysts to commenters to corporations to armchair analysts, it’s become common place. Literally, even manufacturers have gotten in on it.

Like nearly everyone else here, I grew up with an almost natural predilection for cars. They were fun, they moved, they made all kinds of different sounds, they looked different, they felt different - and each and every single one of them was a work of art in their own individual way. But these days, it’s not about that anymore. Whether it be commenters here or manufacturer ‘ring time comparions, nearly our entire world of enthusiasm has become a game of numbets and stats.

So, yeah, I guess I’m a little cynical. But it’t not hard understand why.

I get what you’re saying, liking cars around here has gotten so hipstery that it’s hard to keep track of what’s cool/what isn’t and god help you if you’re on the wrong side of whatever is flavor of the week is.

On the other hand there’s always been auto elitism and snobism, and the number and stats is old as the automobile itself. Regardless of the time era it’s easy to get jaded and burnt out.

This should be like an “OPPO Manifesto”.

And I feel you man, enjoy my comment I just made about the Rutledge Wood garage tour.

http://oppositelock.kinja.com/i-like-him-muc…

Most of his cars aren’t my thing, but I respect him for building what he wants and throwing up his arms and going “THIS IS ME” when someone says “Why would you build that ?!”.

As a guy who loves the brand Mercury I’m very commonly in the “non-cool crowd”

sometimes - a car just for the curve of its hood

this relates to me all too much. But then again I have used that one element to convince myself that something is worthy of my interest and custodianship. A glass key on a Royal typewriter, the nib on a Parker 51, that one perfectly pressed panel or beltline on a a car that is other wise junk. I think the devil is in the details, and like you said, a cult is born for something for all the wrong reasons or a lack of them. I like those devils

From some angles, yes but I’ve always liked the look as in Jaguar kept to its stance on not being derivative to look of other cars in its class.
