The 2016 WRX STI is starting to appear on dealer lots. I stopped by my local dealer today to take a
quick
look at the new arrivals; a WRX STI and a WRX STI Limited, both finished in Ice Silver Metallic.
The biggest change cosmetically for the WRX STI Limited (foreground) is the availability of a low profile lip spoiler in place of the standard height spoiler. While the lip spoiler is a no-cost option, selecting that option does give the STI a different production code; GUW vs GUV. The standard WRX STI (background) is only available with the standard height spoiler.
Personally, I’m not sure how I feel about the spoiler. On one hand, the STI has almost always had the large rear wing, save for a few special models (such as the previous generation’s
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
version available in Japan). It seems odd seeing an STI without the large rear wing. On the other hand, the low profile lip spoiler does give the STI a stealthier, sleeper appearance. It also appears a bit more mature. Everyone has their own opinion on the rear spoiler, but it’s nice that there is finally an option (even if it’s only on the Limited).
Other changes include an upgraded audio head-unit (which I have yet to try) and one touch turn signals for passing. The STI Limited also gets blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic detection (optional on the standard STI).
As for colors; Lapis Blue replaces Galaxy Blue, and Pure Red replaces Lightning Red. Lapis Blue can already be found the new Legacy and Outback, while Pure Red appears to be a new color.
There were no 2016 WRXs on the lot when I was here, but I can go back later if there is interest.

Raises hand. Is it available with an automatic yet?

I could see myself going for the one without the bigass wing.
I like performance-y cars with a bit of luxury touches to them. The STI Limited ticks most of the boxes for me, but the wing puts me off it.
On the other hand, at least with the normal STI wing you could probably find your car in a parking lot.

Bigass wing or GTFAC.

Both have their appeal. Maybe Subaru (or an aftermarket company) needs to make a large rear wing that is easily removable...

Is the optional lip spoiler the same that appears on the ‘15 WRX? Looks like it sticks out further and has a different profile.

Not yet, only the WRX is. The FA20F engine in the WRX is factory rated at 296 hp and 295 ft-lbs of torque in the Japan only Legacy Touring 2.0DIT and Levorg. I imagine the WRX would be easily capable of that, just not with a warranty.

I think it’s the same, but I’m not completely sure. I’m curious now, too, so I might try to see if I can find part numbers. If all else fails, I should be in the area later in the week, and I can check it out. I believe there is a 2015 WRX on the lot with a lip spoiler.

I tend to agree with you on that, however, the lip spoiler didn’t look bad.
I would still go with the large wing.

Looks the same as the one on my WRX to me.

I now have a rare car with my Galaxy blue!
I think I like it better than the new one too, although pictures don’t do the color (either probably) justice.

I think it is the same. Took a knee and got a different angle. Sticks out further than I thought.
Has a low spot in the counter third.

I just did a quick search; the
part #
(96061VA010**, where I believe ** is a paint designation) is the same. In fact, the lip spoiler is also the same on the non-turbo Impreza sedan. That doesn’t really surprise me, as the Impreza, WRX, and STI share the
same trunk lid
.
Part way down both links is a section called Product Fitment/Applications, which is where I’m finding this information.

Lapis Blue is very nice, but it lacks the exclusivity that Galaxy Blue had.
