I’m sure you all knew this already, but share this to people who might not.
Alternatively: Pay attention to the damn road and don’t rear end others.

Can’t stop watching. that’s a lot to watch, the sunroof, the seat, the OH SHIT face. Glad to see he was apparently ok

Isn’t that an urban myth? If you’re hit on a corner, that side of the car will be accelerated more than the other, causing the car to turn even with the front wheels straight.
I’d say it’s much more important to watch your rear-view mirrors when stopped in a situation like that.

Lol, he broke his seat.

Can’t say I’ve ever considered it but it really depends how you’re hit, you might turn anyway. Plus I turn my wheels so I can get out of the road the second there’s space.

That's also why I always check my six when I stop. He might have seen it coming and accelerated away from the impact, or at least the worst of it.

Don’t want to be ‘that’ guy, but I have a question; how would keeping an eye on the mirrors have helped that gent? Semi inbound on the left, loon to the right rear. No place that gent could have gone even had he been watching the mirrors.
Physics sometimes just doesn’t give a crap.

I couldn't help but laugh at this! The seat breaking and the sunroof shade opening and closing is hilarious!

I think it could happen either way, but at 0:06 you can see the driver turn the wheel left with his left hand.

Isn’t this in driving 101?

Er, what about straight ahead? If he’d got on the gas in time, he might have either got far enough further on to let the idiot behind stop in time, or at least have minimised the impact speed. But even if not - say there had been stopped traffic ahead - he’d have had a chance to brace, to make sure he had the brakes on, and so-on.

Srsly

True, but does that actually have much effect there?

There’s always going to be people that missed certain things!

Heh, we’ll just assume both of those together made this crash turn out worse than it should have.

The collision that would have pushed him forward instead pushed him in the direction he was turned, oncoming traffic.

How can you tell? If he was hit on the right rear corner, the car would have done that even if his wheels were turned to the left.

I highly doubt that the driver of that car, even had he been religiously watching the mirrors and nothing else, would have been able to accelerate out of the way. That was a pretty solid impact, and the people that hit him were moving.

Agreed, it’s only a possibility. I don’t know how far back he could have seen the ocoming idiot, though. More a matter of being prepared than avoidance, probably.

The funny thing is that I always turn my wheel in advance for right hand turns (and left-hand turns when I’m in RHD countries). Because then if this happens I will have the best fighting chance of survival (most metal between me and other cars, sideswipe instead of T-bone, etc.).
