I remember driving over to the air-park with my family to ride bikes around the remains of the old military base before they tore it down to build the second runway.

My Dad used to work on the airplanes there and I loved to go visit him for lunch and walk around the hangers. The noises and smells were so cool. Nothing else smells like burned av-gas. This was pre-9/11, so we could pretty much wander around as we wanted.

That air-park basically was Wilmington. The town has not recoved since DHL called it quits. Doubtful it even can.

Glad that vast expanse of concrete is getting some use though. It was the largest privately-owned airport in the US at one point.

They built that bypass around town for all the freight and fuel trucks, and then it all goes under and they have to finish building that road because it was already all funded.

I got the fuck out of there in 2007 and haven’t looked back.
