Kinja'd!!!

After about a month of being homeless(well, for a week. then squatting in a warehouse...) after my original landlady screwed me the fuck over, I now have a very comfortable room in a fortune tellers basement! And so I’ve finally got my shit together with the 240z and have started the prep work for an aggravatingly long list of pretty simple stuff that I don’t have the money for yet... Ah the life of building an autocross racer/ canyon rat on the the budget of a carpenter who doesn’t get paid overtime!

Good luck, I know how the list can be! At least we have a good amount of parts for these being produced, especially new performance options. I hope by next weekend I can finish phase II up, go for a ride up the coast to get a feel for the upgrades. I will post as soon as I get to drive!

I guess my many hours of banked overtime pay has just been paid off with “jackstands”. They’re 10x16 grade 1 Free of Heart Center. They make great stands cause you can put stuff ontop of them and they’re really stable!

I’m just loving how so many things from random junkyard cars will bolt onto these things with a little massaging. I mean come on, my rear diff is a 4.375:1 out of the front of a Datsun 720 4x4!

Lol, imagine how much the Z will be worth by then. I need one soon!

Yeah there are a few options for sure, you have 300ZX diffs, Infinity diffs. I haven’t done a fancy diff swap yet, thats down the road. There are some cool finned rear end billet stuff. I would like to get some nice clean stuff that is well made to go with a diff someday. Arizona Z Car makes these. I would rather have anodized black parts.

The front diff mount is only $36, I might start there.

Man, I’m all too familiar with wanting to do work with my Z but not having the time/place/money. Someday it will get done haha

What are you planning on doing to it next?

Yeah, Arizona Z Car makes some pretty cool stuff. Just looking at the price tag for the whole track pack suspension and brake setup makes me feel like a peasant. For a relatively stock S30 though, I feel like the R200 is almost overkill. I’ve heard of guys with 510s putting SR20s through R160s which are even smaller than the R180. Plus the R200 and weird Infiniti/Armada R260 or whatever just weigh a shit ton. I’d like to keep it light and simple (read cheap) for now.

I’m excited about the 4.375 ratio though! Gonna be waaayyy lower than the stock 3.36 that came in the auto cars.

(Breathes in) Poly bushings, Tokico Illumina struts, Tokico springs, finding some sorta sway bar setup, new frame rails and floor pans (new as in scrap metal), subframe connectors, painting all the suspension bits and pieces and the whole underside of the car, swapping in a “new” R180 with a 4.375 ratio, de-rusting the gas tank, new fuel pump, rebuilding and swapping on the triple weber dcoe 40s, fixing a bunch of funky wiring, maybe building a new dash (the factory dash weighs like 50lbs. and the wiring is kinda funky behind it), actually having bulbs in the tail light sockets, fixing the high beam switch (they’re stuck on right now), stripping all the pointless bondo off the hatch, cutting a new sunroof from some Lexan or whatever I can find (the old sunroof didn’t like sunroofing and exploded on my head...), repairing some minor rust aannnnddddd unbending my stupid $40 steel wheels...

Just wait until the baby boomers get too old to hang onto their Zs and snag a nice one for cheap. Or do what I did, which is have a friend go look at one 800 miles from you and tell you it’s all good and stuff and you pay like nothing for it. Then you fly back home with no return ticket and 3 boxes of parts waiting for you. You proceed to spend your entire christmas vacation getting saturated with Datsun grease and generally piss your family off because you smell like shit and they haven’t seen you at all. Finally you and the aforementioned buddie drive it 800 miles in one day back to Utah with no weather stripping or heater and a lot of holes blowing icecubes on your feet cause it’s like 20 degrees out.

The first plan might seem like the winner except that victory donuts in the parking lot of your college won’t feel as hard earned as my way haha

Mine is just stock for now, I have only done the triple carbs and stuff like a good radiator. So far I guess the biggest change from stock is the 5 speed and the 1986 Maxima brakes on the rear with a bracket kit. I want to use some of their stuff because they are really tough. I broke a stock mustache bar.

Wow, I can almost relate. When I graduated high school (really not long ago) I wanted to spend that summer before college buying this super cheap E30 325is that was S52 swapped. The interior was just put together enough to drive, swap still wasn’t 100% (it was at a good 98%), suspension was just barely good enough to drive on and it had no exhaust. Oh, and did I mention the the red paint was faded to almost pink? Basically it was a fast but shitty car that would be a ton of fun. Long story short my parents refused to let me spend my money on it, which pissed me off and almost caused me to move out early.

Now I’m super interested in following this build, and I really mean that!
