Last night while cleaning her car, my wife let the radio run and it didn’t start this morning without a jump. It charged up and starts fine but Autozone said it’s toast. Should I believe them? The machine said “bad battery” on the screen after the test.
If it is, which replacement should I get? It’s a 2012 with 27k.
Here’s a photo of said car from a while back in Texas.

Leave it for now. If it lets you down again soon, change it.
If you don’t want to take the risk of being stranded, your course of action’s pretty clear...

Ask to look at the printout (at least, our machines have printouts). Check the voltage and the CCAs. If the voltage is below 10.5 volts or the CCAs are below 100, then yeah, it’ll need to be replaced. The one we use has a few different messages: “Replace battery”, “charge”, “good battery - charge”, “good battery”, and “bad cell - replace battery”. Find out which one showed up.
As for batteries, it depends where you are. Most retailers carry batteries from the same manufacturer, but I know AC Delco and Optima also make batteries. Most importantly, I’d look at the warranty and the amount of CCAs produced. If you’re in a colder climate now, I’d also recommend taking a look at an AGM battery.

Get an Autocraft Gold battery. I paid about $120 for mine (also a Subaru and probably the same size you’d use) though it looks like the price has went up a bit. If you order online to pick up in store you can use the $40 off $100 coupon code ( TRT41) or if it’s more than $140 use the 30% off code ( TRT30 ).
Anyway, the main advantage of this battery is the 3 year free replacement warranty. My battery died with about 30 days left on the warranty and they swapped it out with no questions asked. The crazy part is that they just grabbed a battery off the shelf and stuck it in my car and I drove away. Didn’t ring it up as an exchange or anything. So now I have a brand new 3 year warranty as they have no way of pro-rating the coverage.

It is possible to damage a marginal battery by discharging it too deeply, but I’d be quite surprised if you did that. It should have at least a couple more years of life left unless it has been treated very poorly.

If you don’t get one now, get one before winter, unless you live in a place that doesn’t have winter. “bad” now becomes “terrible” in the cold pretty quick...
