We were driving and a brown XC90 caught her eye. She said, “We should get a Volvo for our next car because my parents *had* one when I was growing up.”

My mom wanted me to get an automatic for sure on my first car because “they’re better in snow”. Also, I can’t get a volvo because “You won’t like them”. #MomLogic

Haha, I’m surprised she wouldn’t want you in a Volvo. All parents know they are among the safest cars out there!

About the no manual for your first car: Driving a manual makes it harder to drive distracted. It’s like a built in safety feature.

I don’t buy the “driving stick makes you less distracted” reasoning.

Driving stick is a distraction in and of itself.

There’s literally nothing true about that. The most prolific texting friend that I have has always had a manual car and that never stopped him from texting.

The idea that it somehow makes you an inherently safer driver is objectively bullshit.

I buy into it. learning stick is a mental choir and it leaves little room for brain wander. Once you’ve got past the learning phase its a tool for keeping hands busy. Its much harder to grab your phone for a quick text when you’ve got a shift coming up. That being said, A kid whos just determined to suck at driving will still find ways to do it.

I’ve seen people with auto cars that drive phone in hand the ENTIRE time.

Yes, driving an automatic transmission gives more opportunity to do other, distracting stuff with your free right hand. But that doesn’t mean everyone who drives an automatic transmission drives with distracting stuff in their right hand all the time.

What I’m saying is, if you take two drivers who are both not fucking around with their cell phones, manual shifting requires more of their attention.

If I had a kid who was learning to drive, I’d rather they start out on an automatic transmission along with a firm understanding that if they ever fuck with their phone while driving they will lose their keys so fast and for such a long time they won’t be driving again until they’re 45.

Not the worst reason I’ve heard. Volvo’s philosophy has pretty much been the same the last 60 years.

That’s the entire reason Volvo still exists. They don’t really compete with anyone, people who buy them stick with the company for generations. Most of the people that were looking at the new XC90 were driving early 2000’s Volvos. And people who came to look at the used early 2000’s Volvos were driving 240s and 90’s Volvos.
