I was driving behind a 1st gen Freelander the other day and I damn near rear ended it. Because the brake lights are not in the taillight housings. Theyre in the bumper and above the spare tire. I was looking for brake lights where they didnt exist, and by the time I realized where they were, it was almost too late. Has anyone had an experience like this on the road?

Any car with aftermarket clear turn signals. They seem invisible to me.

I was once behind a rusted out silver Ford Windstar going 15 in a 45 on a dry road, on a sunny day, with enough bumper stickers to act as a structural component of the vehicle; oh, and that goddamnmotherfuckingtwatwaffle was riding his fucking brakes the entire way down this two-lane road where I had no chance to pass.
Over 2 miles later and I truly believed that I could have gotten away with murder if I just explained my position to a jury.

Infiniti EX/QX50, and Kia sportage. I hate low-mounted turn signals.

I look at taillight housings first, then third brake lights ever since I found out pickup trucks made before 1993 didnt need 3rd brake lights

That’s awful brake light design.
I’ve driven behind 2 Suzuki SX4’s
On both occasions they were driving at a snails pace, way under the speed limit and one of them switched lanes twice without signaling forcing the next person they got in front of to slam on the brakes.
Fuck this car and everyone who drives them.

The freelander wasn’t made until 97 so would then require the 3rd light

So you saw brake lights but they weren’t where you expected them to be and you almost crashed?
My friend had one of those in high school, I think the one you saw was re-wired wrong, don’t ever remember those lower things lighting up other than for reversing.

Im aware, but its a habit I formed, I dont want to rely on the car in front of me having a 3rd brake light, because it may not

My brain really wants to see symmetry, so whenever I’m behind on of these I have little OCD panic attacks. It’s been so bad I’ve ignored traffic lights because I was to busy staring in disgust at one.

Those are terrible. They look like red reflectors just sitting there and you think they didn’t use their signals because the lights you’re looking at aren’t blinking.

Some redneck truck that was wired all wrong. Its taillights were in the casings for the third brake light and left reverse light. The brake lights were the left taillight, left turn signal, and license plate light. I have no idea how you screw up that bad.
Probably took it to a Jaguar dealership to get the wiring done.

I agree that this is stupid. It’s even more irritating on the Kia Sportage because its tail lights are huge, but the brake lights are the little tiny lights in the bumper.
The Nissan 350Z has the opposite problem. The brake lights and tail lights are integrated, but the turn signals are in the bumper lights.

Yeah that always confused me. Another one i dont like is the newer Regal tail lights. They have all of that tail light and the actual light is on the edges. The car looks great other wise

I was behind a Grand Am once that had it’s tail light bulbs replaced with LEDs..... LEDs that did not light up the housing for the reflector, just the ONE INCH DIAMETER CIRCLE that the bulb displaced.
Just imagine... ALL THAT TAIL LIGHT, only a ONE INCH circle tells you they’re stopping. And the third brake light. But I digress.

Was behind an E36 coupe 4-cyl today. The guy must have been busy on whatssapp or drunk, couldn’t keep a consistent speed, wandered into the oncoming lane, etc... At first I wanted to pass him, but then decided that staying way back and just watching what happens would be way safer. Watching him drift through a roundabout was entertaining though.

I typically find more trouble with the type of license plate than where the brake lights are.

Am I the only one who regularly gets passed by reckless Prius drivers talking on their phones while doing 80 in the right lane? Seriously, they’re the exact opposite of these stereotypes around me.

In the state of Indiana you are only reqired to have 2 out of 3 brake lights working... so you learn to look at all of the lights. I’ve seen a fair number of cars with only 1 working brake light in the 2 years I have lived here. Thankfully I’ve never seen or run into a car with 0 brake lights.

A county sheriff’s Expedition I had to drive behind for 35 miles this morning. When I was already running late. And I didn’t have time to make coffee this morning, either.
At least my playlist was on point.

I was going to say the lights are down there because of EU lighting regs but I’m not sure if that’s the case. You have to be able to see the tail lights and indicators when the rear door is open and because the spare wheel is where it is it will obscure lights in the usual location. I hadn’t thought that brake lights were covered by this but there you go.
Could you really get a V8 Freelander in America? They were usually 2 litre diesels back home.

Definitely the most annoying are Audi and Mercedes vehicles I have seen with what looks like the brake lights constantly lit up. This is while following behind them for a while on the highway. They obviously were accelerating and not braking so the lights were surely incorrect. I have learned however, these may be rear foglights left on all the time, but not sure if any US-spec cars have those.

Yeah, plenty of European cars, especially the more upscale ones, keep the rear fog lights on the US-spec models. Some others instead configure them as a second set of brake lights.
When used properly, they’re an excellent way of making yourself seen in fog and other low-visibility conditions, but the vast majority of people seem to leave them on all the time, which is a real pet peeve of mine.

At least you drive behind people that have working tailights. Where I drive, people just make sure the engine and differential are barely working. Car doesn’t have to have working lights, mirrors, windows or properly inflated tires.
