The wheels were looking pretty bad after 30 years of wear and tear on them. They were starting to surface rust so I decided to take care of it.

Kinja'd!!!

As you can see they were looking pretty rough. After I took this pic I sanded them down with 150 grit washed them and wiped them down with acetone.

Kinja'd!!!

I decided to go with the factory white on the wheels to keep it clean and original looking.

Two coats of Rustoleum really worked wonders on these wheels they look like brand new again.

Kinja'd!!!

I know there is a we bit of overspray but I’ll take care of that with a SOS pad and it will be like it came off the assembly line.

Once the wheels are completely dry I’ll take a pic with them back on the truck.

Looks good. Those are different before/after wheels.

You'll have to touch up when you get the weights off.

Yeah the before pic was on of the back wheels and the after is the front wheel. You can tell by the two different weights on them. And the fact that I have Bridgestone’s in the back and Yokohama’s in the front.

I know I’ll have to touch them up eventually but since I have virtually new tires so I won’t have to worry about that for a few years as long as I don’t get a flat.

Thanks bud! I’m amazed that people don’t do this stuff on their old vehicles. I’ve spent so far about $25 bucks in materials and 6-8 hour of my time over a few nights in the garage to paint the grill, back bumper, mirrors, wheels and the truck looks at least 10 years newer. Why someone would just leave it shitty for years is beyond me.

Fantastic. Looks like brand-new steelies. Amazing what some sand paper, elbow grease, and a spray can will do.

Most people just don’t give a crap, especially with trucks.

Looking great! Love the painted mirrors.

Here’s another view of the mirrors

Kinja'd!!!

I thinks that’s what made the biggest difference to the overall appearance of the truck. Those white mirrors were a major eye sore.

Yeah, they really caught your eye before.

WHAT?! White mirrors are classic, I am very disappointed... ;)

Time, money, space, lack of tools, skill gap, experience, apathy - it could be any of those reasons. It’s not because someone doesn’t care that they don’t do all the touch-ups that could be done.

Time: Ok maybe, but instead of doing it all at once spread it out to a bunch of little jobs rather than one big job. I try to do one thing a week for 2-3 hours.

Money: Come on, I’ve spent about 25 bucks so far revamping this truck.

Lack of tools: Sandpaper, masking tape and some screw drivers/basic wrenches. Every household should have this.

Skill gap/experience: It’s spray paint if you can’t handle that you shouldn’t even own anything mechanical.

Apathy: This is the only logical thing I can think of as to why it was never done.

I’m not sure how I feel about those mirrors, but lucky for you it doesn’t matter. There’s just something off with them, maybe because they’re not chrome.

Man, I grew up in trucks like this. White mirrors for me please.

It’s OK if you have bad taste. Don’t feel bad about it. :)

Fair enough. I though of one more thing: cost-benefit ratio. The cost of the project (measured in time, money, effort, vehicle unavailability, etc etc etc) may well be greater than the benefit (it has pretty wheels) to the majority of owners.

I’m not trying to be argumentative, but I know that there are a lot of other more important or more “valuable” activities people would rather do.

But to be honest, those wheels to look really great re-painted. You might just motivate me to take better care of my vehicles, maybe...

I guess it helps a lot that this is only a second vehicle so I can afford to wait for paint to dry.

For me this stuff was worth every second for some maybe they would rather be playing Xbox or jerking off. I have more way time than money, for some they would just rather buy new wheels and be done with it. For me it’s like “for 10 bucks and 2-3 hours of my time I can have for almost brand new wheels for about half the price of only one new steel wheel? Challenge accepted!”

I don’t enjoy doing the work one bit but the end result often far outweighs the fact that I have to do it. Now for the next 4-5 years I can look at the truck and be “yeah that was a good use of an evening”.

Hover chevy away!

I did something similar with my truck. Repainted the battered black wheels to white, made a massive difference to the look of the truck.

It looks way better with the White wheels IMO. That’s a pretty sweet old truck too by the way.
