Especially if it’s a left turn and you’re now crossing lanes with oncoming traffic heading your way.

Kinja'd!!!

Can’t share the video but a few hours ago there was a rolled truck in the middle of the intersection that gunned it to beat a left turn signal and got t-boned by an oncoming SUV. No word on injuries.

And why did this haappen? Because the guy in the truck didn’t want to wait 1:40 seconds for the next left turn green. (And yes I know it’s 1:40 seconds). No, he wanted to gun it through the yellow light and put someone in the hospital and ruin their vehicle. 1:40 seconds wouldn’t cost you as much as this situation is going to.

Good job, dick.

Honestly, regular RYG Left Turns are being phased out because of more efficient flashing yellow arrows - they won’t turn red if the oncoming signal still has a green.

Kinja'd!!!

If the MUTCD have their way, the regular Red-Yell0w-Green Left is on the verge of extinction.

This one was a 5 ball guarded - you’d ‘ve surprised how hard it is to find a 5 ball amber guarded signalhead picture. But you’re correct, the new flashing yellows are going up anywhere we have a new intersection. Makes way more sense.

While I agree that these people are annoying and running lights is dangerous, the person with the green light probably should’ve had better situational awareness and seen a big car in their way and used the brakes.

I’m a bit confused. Did the oncoming traffic (assuming straight ahead) not have a red light while the left turn had a yellow (arrow?) light?

The protected turns where I live and learned to drive give the left turn lane a green arrow while giving oncoming traffic a red light. The green arrow changes from green to yellow, then it disappears; after which, the oncoming traffic gets a green light. You can still make a left turn, but only when it is clear. There is also enough time to clear a left turn on yellow, before the oncoming traffic gets a green light.

Is the system where you are different, or am I reading things wrong?

On coming had no chance to see the turning truck as they trucks turning and blocking the view of the rolled trucks lane - which makes it worse for the rolled truck because he wouldn’t be able to see the oncoming straight through traffic which would be even more reason for him not to take the turn.

I need to re-watch. Normally that light cycles guarded green, guarded yellow, red, unguarded green and so forth.

It’s Virginia, our systems make little sense a is anyways.

I re-watched and while it is a 5 ball with guarded left turn, when the accident occurred it wasnt guarded

I’ll agree with you on turns, and on principle in general, but I’ve learned from experience that vehicles like large trucks towing trailers (or large vans full of cardboard boxes. So many boxes. You try to get rid of them but every day there’s more. Where do they keep coming from? Why won’t the stop? Please someone make them stop) are much better off running the light than trying to stop in time.

Wait, I don’t get it. All the lights I’ve seen have a second or so delay between one side turning red and the other turning green. If your example was in the intersection when oncoming traffic was moving fast enough to do damage, that’s not trying to beat a yellow, that is blatantly running a red.

Unless I’m missing a detail, which is entirely likely.

completely agree - I always just sit in the middle of the intersection and block traffic instead of getting out of the way when the light turns yellow. It’s much safer that way.

From what I can tell the oncoming has a green and the rolled truck was jumping a yellow

He took the yellow at a good 30 mph. Had he pulled into the intersection and waited, considering reds here are 3 seconds, he could have made it through safe after oncoming passed- without blocking traffic

The problem I have with the flashing yellow is that, at a moment’s glance, one might think they have a solid yellow, which gives the person turning left the right-of-way.

I think most FYA signals have some sort of sign indicating which yellow is which, but common sense would say the second-from-top yellow means get ready to stop.
