I’m going to miss the Econoline and all the other giant V8 American work vans. Which are being replaced by Jap Crap. Like these two! And the City Express.

They even look weak, the wheels are tiny and the engines are laughably slow and horrible.

I don’t avoid him.

I simply deflate his tires and shit in his air filter.

Hate it all you want, but emissions regulations are killing the V8s.

Posts pictures of Nissan vans, lamenting loss of full size V8-powered Econoline.

Overlooks fact that Nissans competitor for Econoline is full size, V8-powered, truck-based van.

I dunno man, the new Transit Connect seems pretty neat.

But the thing is, the Econolines are getting replaced WITH the Nv200 rather than the logical choice.

I’ve driven the Nissan NV2500, the Ford Transit, and all manners of Sprinters for work, they all have as much get up and go as any Econoline or Express I’ve ever driven (and that includes the V10 Econoline). Though the turbo lag in first on the Sprinter is a bit heinous.

Sprinters are good vans, I hate the angle of the shifter though on the newer models though.

The logical choice is whatever has the lowest operating costs for the owner while meeting their needs.

Kinja'd!!! jkm7680 > Jcarr

And their needs only. The people who drive the vans don’t matter.

Not especially that, but I dislike how it protrudes and the motion it makes. A column shifter would be much nicer.

I don’t mind the big V8 vans are terrible my father in laws Chevys barely manage 14mpg even with a light load, or no load at all. At least they don’t rust like Ecolines.

That’s mainly because the Japanese just can’t seem to make a van that suits the US market well.

That said...

...can’t go wrong with some EcoBoost. Plus, it’s still rear wheel drive!

Those aren’t direct replacements though. These would be the replacements:

They may not have V8s, but they are better vehicles with more powerful engines and better handling (not really that hard given that US cargo vans had barely changed in 20 years.

They’re alright. The Dodge whatever it basically an ancient Fiat that they’ve just brought over now. Same goes with the other rebadged Dodge. The Americans are back to rebadging everything again.

wait...what? The econoline is being replaced with the vastly superior transit with I5 diesel or twin turbo V6 engines. The econoline could only wish it was as cool.

Kinja'd!!! jkm7680 > HammerheadFistpunch

Kinja'd!!!0

I’m fine with the Transit, but I feel that an Econoline could take a hell of a beating. I may be wrong, but newer vans feel less durable. Probably because the Econoline is more or less the same and has been for like 30 years now.

Who’s replacing the econoline with shitty little Nissans? I’ve seen a huge increase in Ram Pro Masters around here and i’m hoping soon to see some of these guys.

Kinja'd!!!

I drove a bunch of econolines, and two maybe 30 year old chevy club vans for a while. No love lost over the phase out of those guys. They were real workhorses and I know plenty of examples will live on but I’m not going to long for them.

I love old school tech just about as much as anyone...what I’m saying is that the econoline was never under attack from light duty vehicle like the nv200.

Kinja'd!!! boxrocket > jkm7680

The NV200 is ugly, as is the NV2000 (and I hate the name for sounding like “envy”), but somehow the Shitty Express looks worse than both. But they are made in Mexico, so technically [North] ‘Murican.

I’ve seen entire fleets switch to the shitty little Nissans. Mainly contractors.

Sound like shitty contractors. Where at if you don’t mind me asking. I don’t think I’ve seen a single Nissan up here in upstate NY or back when I lived in new England. Maybe they suck in snow? I see a handful of transits and maybe two promasters, but it’s almost exclusively late model Chevy/fords and sprinters still. More sprinters all the time it seems.

Kinja'd!!! Nauraushaun > jkm7680

They’re for transporting things, safely and efficiently. They’re not supposed to be fun, if you want fun you shouldn’t be in a van.

Kinja'd!!! jkm7680 > Nauraushaun
06/18/2015 at 07:38

Kinja'd!!!0

Did I ever say they needed to be fun?

I didn’t, all I said was that how livable the van is for the person driving the van is important.

Kinja'd!!! Nauraushaun > jkm7680
06/18/2015 at 08:19

Kinja'd!!!0

That is what you said, but given that modern vans are more comfortable, efficient and safe than they’ve ever ever been (especially compared to a V8 hunk of steel from three decades ago), I’d say the person driving the van is in a better position than they’ve ever been.

The only thing they don’t offer is fun.

If fun isn’t what you’re after, why do you miss V8 powered vans?

Kinja'd!!! jkm7680 > Nauraushaun
06/18/2015 at 11:12

Kinja'd!!!0

The V8 powered vans would run forever, last forever and were solidly built.

The Nissans are built like tin cans, have tiny little wheels and simply couldn’t take the beating that the Fords did for three decades.
