That movie was intentionally funny. Adam West’s Batman series won an Emmy for best comedy. The first episode is about the riddler trying to sue Batman for false arrests, for fuck’s sake!

The movie and the original series was campy, which is intentionally funny in it’s own way, but I don’t think the producers or the actors ever intended for the show to come off that slapstick during the first season. Or to have that being the lasting impression.

When they were in the early days of pre production they had a different actor playing Batman and had no plans to add humor at all, William Dozier’s production company decided they had to lighten the show to get it one air. New actor’s and writers were hired. At least that’s what I remember from that PBS special about 60’s tv.

I hadn’t heard about the Emmy, that’s my thing to learn for the day.
