I’ve been keeping track of maximum speed limits by state since 2013 and this year, 2015, has been a GREAT one for reasonable speed limits. As traffic fatalities consistently go down year by year while Interstate speed limits are going up, the ‘speed kills’ lobby (*cough AAA *cough*) just doesn’t sound convincing to most anymore. As such, lawmakers are warming up to the idea of ‘reasonable’ speed limits.
Changes from 2014 are as follows (note that some speed limits still have to be officially posted): Montana 75 -> 80 mph, Nevada 75 -> 80 mph, South Dakota 75 -> 80 mph, Washington 70 -> 75 mph, Maryland 65 -> 70 mph, and Wisconsin 65 -> 70 mph (finally -_-).
As of 2015, seven out of 50 states have rural speed limits of 80 mph or higher and 40 states have rural speed limits of 70 mph or higher.
Pretty impressive considering that the national double nickel was repealed a decade ago (1995).
The national double nickel which was repealed in 1995 should be a distant memory...

The increase from 70 to 75 in Washington was vetoed by the Governor.

Hard to believe mid 90’s was 20 years ago. We're all getting older.

From the IIHS website, as a sidenote: “In Washington State, maximum speed limits on highways or portions of highways may be posted as high as 75 mph if based on a traffic and engineering study, effective August 2015.” Articles, like this one , stated it was a partial veto that left intact a section of the bill allowing for a traffic study.

The study is on but judging by his statements when he vetoed raising the limit it looks like the legislature would have to override him to get the speed limit actually raised. The real question is when Oregon will get with the program? Once you cross the river it’s like you’re moving in slow motion.

Driving out to Oregon in April I went SD -> MT -> ID. It wasn’t great for my fuel economy, but I made excellent time.

I wish the “speed kills” lobby would focus more on “speed differences kill”. I doubt any of the minimum speed limits on the interstates have been changed (40-45 mph). The time difference on an 80 mph vehicle overtaking a 40 mph vehicle is frightening. The problem is that west of the Missouri River, interstates often take the place of sections of highway, so traffic that should stay on a highway is either forced to drive on gravel county roads, or drive on the interstate.

I don’t have a problem with speed increasing pending
A) increased driver training
B)
because people are morons and think they can still do 65mph in a torrential downpour or snowstorm.
