As I posted earlier, my Aunt and Uncle are looking to buy a truck for their recently acquired farm. Meet the three leading contestants.

First off, we have this 1985 Chevrolet C/K 1500. It looks to be in fairly decent condition, and I bet after a wash, polish, and wax that it will look pretty much new.

Secondly, we have this 1987 Ford F-150 with EFI! It’s RWD with a straight six, so it should be relatively bulletproof. Unfortunately, this is the nice view of it.

Kinja'd!!!

Out back, it has some weird primer and stripe job that makes the truck look like it’s really beat-up. However, the wheels are nice, and it may come with a toolbox.

Finally, we have this 1986 GMC Sierra 1500. It may look neglected, and it may have ran when parked, but it is $500 cheaper than the other two.

Kinja'd!!!

Inside, we have a wide bench seat and a very cracked dash, but everything seems to be there. Besides, you don’t buy a $1000 truck for it’s looks.

So which one of these three workhorses would Oppo choose?

For $500 more, I’d rather have the good looking Chevy

Again, I’d say Ford. That straight six, ( likely a 300) is bomb proof. And the colour is nothing a rattle can can’t fix.

Either one of the GM’s.

I just did a bit more digging on that sic in the Ford, it is in fact a 300ci/4.9 litre and is pro ably one of Fords single most reliable engines. It was around since the early fifties in one form or another.

Ford definitely believes in the mantra of ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.’

The earlier EFIs on the 300 sixes aren’t that great

The GMs probably have a weird computer controlled Rochester Quadrajet carb and either 305s or 350s. I’m not a fan of the 305s

We had a GMC 1500 similar to the 85 with the overdrive transmission. One of the shift points was right at 50 mph, which is where the truck drove down the highway the easiest. So it would just shift up and down over and over again right at the speed you wanted to drive. Really annoying

If those are the choices it’s GM all the way. Either one.

I have a Computer-Controlled Carb on my Cutlass. It isn’t that bad, but it isn’t as good as EFI.

I’d take the Ford considering it’s 4.9L six will run for ever

If it’s 2wd it’s a C1500, 4x4 is k1500

I don't know what it is, so I called it as Wikipedia calls it - a C/K.

I’d take an old school Q-Jet over the computer controlled stuff or the early EFI systems any day of the week.

Unlike fancy modern EFIs, that old Ford stuff is plagued with electrical gremlins from the factory, not to mention the years of tinkering by backyard mechanics. They normally don’t get much better mileage or power than the carb’d trucks anyway. The heads and exhaust manifolds used on the EFI big six are the best ones available for that motor, so you can use the EFI head, EFI exhaust manifolds, and an aftermarket 4-bbl intake and carb to get the most potential out of the 300 with no machine work. The 240 heads will significantly raise the compression, but the combustion chambers are a bit small. Since they are reverse flow heads, the exhaust manifolds will heat up the cast iron intake and boil the gas out of the carb and cause it to be hard to start when hot. This doesn’t happen often, but it can be annoying. Keep in mind that both systems are on old trucks and neither will not be the most reliable vehicle. There’s not many advantages of one system over another, but I think the carb’d 300 will be easier to live with.

The Ford Straight 6 in Australia got a turbo version, those lucky upside down bastards.

The Chevy 305 is less durable and has a shorter life expectancy than any of the Straight 6s offered by an American manufacturer. Regardless of who made it, the American l6s are old school and bomb proof. The Ford will also have better axles unless it has a twin traction beam front, but these are rwd so you don’t have to worry about that. (9” and Dana 44 vs 10 Bolts, the 9” and 44s will win any day)

Based on the farm plated trucks around here they need a Lincoln or Cadillac. Or a huge dodge 4x4 that never sees dirt.

Resident older Ford guy here.

Buy the blue chevy. I’m guessing it has a 350 in it. The goal is a chevy 350.

Wow, you know Fords are bad when a Ford guy tells you to buy a Chevy. JK, I love mustangs, panthers, and pretty much any RWD Ford with a decent amount of power.

Hahaha. for this generation of trucks, those Chevy’s (if it’s a 350) are pretty much unstoppable.

I may be a Ford guy but I’m really a Big 3 guy. I lean towards Ford but support all 3 (I mean...2.5...yeah, big 2.5 lol)
