I’m looking to buy myself a car because currently I don’t have one and what I’m seriously considering is an E36, preferably a six-cylinder one but I am willing to drop down to a 318is if the deal is good enough. I’m considering these because they’re represent some of the best value for money on the market, especially when Corolla’s of the same vintage tend to go for similar prices. and suit my needs.

I have a budget of around AU$4000, so a MX-5/Miata is out of the question, besides it’s a bit too small for a daily. Another bonus is that all the dickheads around here drive E46’s or Chevy-badged Commodores so there isn’t really that much of a negative stigma attached to them.

So, Oppo, is there any reason why I shouldn’t?

Just check the blinker fluid before buying.

The general consensus is that the coolant system plastics are brittle and prone to cracking/leaking.

as long as Australia isn’t extremely hot and dry you should be alright.

Not really. A good gauge is usually to look up how much basic parts cost at a local parts store. Things like an alternator or a water pump.

No reason why you shouldn't. Replace the cooling system whenever it needs work with one of the many aluminum units and you'll be set. Do it do it do it.

An AE86 that costs $4000 would be a complete bucket, same with an S13. I really wanted one but too pricey.

I see the chevy badge but I have no idea what that is. Must be another Australia special.

Damn that sucks. In the US, good ‘86s are hard to find, and even harder to find at $4k. But they do pop up from time to time.

ORLY? That’s pretty fucking neato. I’d love to see one with E46 guys, but I get the feeling it would looks like a Jersey Shore casting call with too much house music.

E46 owners would say:

Is my subframe cracked?

Stupid DISA is not working again!

My wagon has rear hatch rust.

Is my head gasket blown?

Because E39s exist.

Too big, too expensive and manuals are unicorns. I’m a fan of E39’s but not at that price.

I’m driving a manual 528i that I bought for the equivalent of $3,800 AUD. Bargain E39s are out there, you just have to be willing to buy a high mile car.

Because there is no such thing as a cheap used BMW! Stay away unless you are financially stable enough to have another $1000 around at all times for emergencies. I have watched my friend pour SO MUCH money (probably $4000 at this point) into his $3k E36 and it still looks, sounds, and drives like a beater because he spends so much on maintaining the thing. You need something japanese! I too bought a $4000 German car when I was younger, and it only lasted me a year before it needed $900 worth of parts and hours of labor and I cut it loose. You have to straddle the line between performance and reliability with a budget like that and the E36 is notoriously unreliable + built from expensive parts. Good luck with your search! I don’t know what’s available in your country but in the US you can buy an early 90s ‘vette or mustang for that price? What about a lexus IS300!? Maybe more your style? I think that’s the closest you’ll get to an E36 without paying $600+ per year to drive a perpetually broken BMW.
