My next door neighbor had his ‘96 Civic sedan stolen last night. But luckily it was found abandoned at the hospital half a mile away with nothing missing. It reminded me of my misfortune back in my late teens, when my slushbox Integra (I know, I know) was stolen out of my best friend’s driveway at 3am (which was later abandoned).

I think by now a good number of adults have suffered through the event of a disappearing vehicle... What about you?

My sister’s Civic was broken into and they stole her expensive Timbuk2 bag.

hmmm that DA.

Thankfully no I’ve never had my car stolen, nor has my family. I’ve had friends though who have suffered sadly, a STI, WRX, Evo...just to name a few.

Yeah. My 89 Supra was stolen on March 13 (forget the year). My wife and I drove around looking for it, but came up empty-handed. I bought a 92 Supra later that day (I work quick) with a blown head gasket planning on a new engine, and parked it in front of my wife’s Supra (we like Supras), yanked the battery and removed 2 spark plug wires.

The next morning my wife wakes me up crying saying her Supra was missing. DAMN IT!!! We drive around again looking for it and actually come across my 89 Supra! Stereo gone, tools gone, center console ripped out, etc, but nothing major missing.

We find her Supra a few weeks later, only the stereo was gone and her cherry steering wheel cover was missing. Go figure.

2 Supras within 24 hours..=/ With older cars if you shave a key down, the stock alarm won’t go off.

Had my Skyline R33 GTS25T coupe stolen while i was at work about 6 years ago. Spent a lot of time trying to find the car, nothing was ever found. wasnt insured either. learnt my lesson on that one, everything insured since.

The feeling of going out to your car after a hard days work, and seeing the spot empty is just the worst.

Damn, never knew that.

So let me get this straight, you immobilized your wife’s Supra and parked your non running vehicle in front of it and they still stole it? I hate people.

I had a 95 Accord stolen on the night before Valentine’s Day, 2002. First car I ever picked out and purchased with my own money. They never found it.

Not long before that, maybe a month or so, my neighbor’s CRX stolen from the same parking lot, but his was recovered within a month.

I REALLY shouldn’t temp fate, but its never happened to me either. I probably should be extra worried since I drive a ‘15 Civic.

Worst I ever had was a stolen radar detector when I left the windows down like a dumbass.

Timing is everything for sure. When my Integra got jacked, I was broke, unemployed, perpetually single, contemplating dropping out of college, one of my lower points in life. To walk outside and see that vacant driveway. I wasn’t even mad. I was defeated haha

A bit over a year ago I had the shit beaten out of me by some random stranger who was asking me to give them a ride at 4am and making more and more absurd claims about how they would pay me “$100” to drive them somewhere. I refused because I was drunk, I wasn’t going anywhere. As I was walking away so as not to be near some crazy guy, he ran up and started punching me in the head (from behind). I think he expected to knock me out because he seemed panicked when I turned around and started shouting, but I was drunk and long story short he got my keys and got into the car and just managed to get away as I was pulling on his head trying to get him out of the seat. Obviously it’s stupid to fight back, if he had a gun or knife, I would have been in a worse position. But I was drunk and I forgot about all that momentarily in the WTF-ness of the moment. I ran into the street and flagged down some kids in a volvo who called the police for me (my phone was in the car). I still have a scar on my elbow from when he pushed me over on the sidewalk and grabbed the keys.

The car turned up a few days later filled with dirty clothes. Two trash bags worth. The guy also made several calls using my phone - but neither he nor my phone were seen again. I’m just glad the car was recovered. I’m sure a guy who acts like that gets what’s coming to him sooner or later, so I don’t sweat it over his future.

My coworker’s 95 Accord was stolen juat last month. Accord, integra, civic... maybe we should go back in time and tell our younger selves, “please don’t buy the most stolen cars in America. Try a Paseo.”

No, got rid of them one by one. My 92 (with a 2JZ-GE swap) was hit by a truck in a parking lot. My 89 wouldn’t pass smog thanks to new california laws, and my wife’s supra had some electrical gremlins where the power would cut out for no reason. It was also developing a blown head gasket, so we junked it.

Had my Legacy GT stolen, 6 days after I bought it. Even worse, I hadn’t been able to transfer the title completely, as the DMV had been closed over a long weekend and I also was having trouble getting in touch with the current owner (guy I bought it from never transferred the title, yeah I know, should have been proactive with getting that figured out with the seller). It was kind of my first car (had a project, this was a true daily driver), I can’t even describe the feeling of walking out and finding it gone.

Got a call from the cops three weeks later, they said they had found it parked and that I could either come pick it up and risk the thief moving it before I got there, or pay the impound fees. I pulled up the address they gave on Google Maps and discovered it was less than a mile away. I walked there, and drove straight to an auto parts store to buy one of those steering wheel clubs.

On the bright side, apparently the dumbass thief only kinda knew how to drive stick, and destroyed the clutch. Insurance payed for a dealer installed clutch kit, so that’s pretty good. It’s a great story, too.

Stories like these are why people throw up their hands, give up, and just buy a Camry. Also why I don’t want to buy any of my dream cars: the universe will find a way to take it away from me.

Yeah I was pretty psyched about it. Of course the bad omen of the original theft was pretty on point. It’s been lemon ever since, spent more time waiting around to be fixed than being a driver. As in, I’m a snowboarder and I’ve owned it for two seasons and have yet to take it up to the mountain a single time. When I scrap it/part it out (which will be soon) it’s going to be a long and scathing Oppo review.

I do have an amusing stolen car story though. Way way back when I first moved out, my room mate had a VW Rabbit GTI. It was given to him for free by somebody who saw him driving his $400 AmeriRab around. It lived in a detached garage and not infrequently we’d find homeless people sleeping in it.

Anyway - one morning it disappeared! Friend calls the cops, gives them the description of the car - and they find it about an hour later. About a block and half away. This GTI had a problem where the engine would stall if you took a corner too quickly. Apparently only a block and a half into their joyride the thief did this and killed the engine. I would have paid so much to have seen their faces when that engine stalled.

Avoided having my car stolen in college.

Got a call at 3am from the campus cops. Went out and found the car (91 Prelude), driver’s window shattered, sitting half in the grass on the opposite end of the lot from where I’d parked it. Apparently they got it started and couldn’t drive stick and just let it roll. Then they were bold enough to steal the poor Accord that I always parked next to. Found a pile of glass where it always sat. They did steal my disc-man and cassette adapter (though not the DC adapter or any CDs for some reason!). Bastards.

Two additional times people broke the ignition lock cylinder of that car trying to force it. Once in a Home Depot parking lot in the middle of the day...I was only in the store for like 10 minutes too. They’re fast.

Accord guy never got the car back and started driving a Cavalier. No one attempted to steal that.

Back in 2001 my dad bought a brand new Silverado 2500HD. A couple months later it went in to a local dealership for a recall of some sort. Well the first night it was there, someone stole it and the police found it 40 or so miles away. They took the radio and then set the engine bay on fire. We ended up having to fight the dealership for a few weeks for them to take responsibility for it and we ended up buying an equivalent 2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD. This time with the 8.1. A good event, in my opinion.
