The other day I hit 180k miles in my Subaru, yesterday when I got home there was a good bit of smoke coming from the engine bay. My car apparently has decided to celebrate the occasion by spawning an oil leak and dripping on to the up pipe. Hooray! Pretty sure it’s either the valve cover gasket or a Turbo oil return/supply line. I’ll have to degrease the whole area tonight and try to see right where the leak is.

“huh, the burning oil smell is different today, wonder if it’s a different oil leaking onto my hot exhaust today” ~ me driving my ‘92 Legacy some years ago

At least it’s not a head gasket.

Sounds pretty close to me daily, but this is quite a significant amount that’s leaking through.

I have narrowed it past that! Was really worried for a bit last night that it would be a headgasket.

Literally just had this fixed on my Legacy GT, passenger valve cover gasket was the culprit.

I am looking at buying a 09 Legacy GT with about 95k on it, as a Subaru owner, would you recommend buying a Subie with that many miles? I am assuming that it has been on the right service schedule but I am still hesitant buying a car with that many miles on it for $12500.

I'm convinced that's my problem. It's leaking up by the timing belt cover and the turbo oil return line is more towards the back of the engine. So either the valve cover gasket or the gaskets for the plugs.

I don't think those miles are too bad but check to see if the timing belt has been replaced. If it is from a dealer see if they will do the 100/120k mile service. Try to find records of what has been replaced

That's what I have read, it is from a dealer and the book price is about 15k so really its a pretty good deal but I just gotta see if it has had the that done. I am hoping they have the records and everything checks out because I haven't been able to find any other "interesting" cars in my price range and area.

They are really cool cars. Definitely check for any timing belt repair, headgasket repair, and I believe those had an issue with the Banjo bolt filter in the oil supply line to the turbo breaking apart and causing turbo failure. I think it can be fixed by just using a banjo bolt without the filter.

I have an 05 LGT and I picked it up with 72k miles and a bumper to bumper warranty. If they offer one, grab it. It has already paid for itself on my car. The later gen GTs didn’t have as many niggling problems but I feel like anything that close to or over 100k miles should get an inspection prior to purchasing just to save yourself headaches down the road.

Ok thanks for the Info! I want to know everything I can before I go look at the car so I know what to look for.

Best of luck man! I thought my car was going to blow up when I parked at work in the morning due to all the oil burning off.

They dealership that has it, has a pretty good reputation so I don’t think it will be a junker but I don’t think they offer any warranties on their cars maybe a 60 day guarantee or something like that. This is the one I am interested in getting http://www.jerryscars.com/inventory/Deta… The only bad part is that the car fax said something about it hitting a deer so I would really need to have it checked out before buying it.

Yeah, that might be why the price is below book? I’m not sure if the dealer has to offer it but the warranty company is CNA. I might sound like a salesman but they have really helped me out with my car. Paid $2700 for the warranty but it has already covered $4000 in work/labor and has 10,000 miles remaining on it. Best of luck, let us know how it turns out
