What car/truck (or brand of car/truck) are you most likely to assume will be there, revving, before you even turn your eyes to confirm?
Motorcycles not included.

For some reason, these two always try to race me when I’m in my BRZ. No one tries to race my AW11. They know they’ll be killed by it.

Do you live in Chillicothe, Ohio too?

Depends on what it sounds like. If I hear a diesel spool up, I’m not going to assume it’s a Civic. Likewise if I hear a sewing machine, I’m not going to assume it’s a Camaro.

Some ugly lifted truck. Won’t even dignify brands with a mention.

Where I live, I automatically assume it's a brodozer. They drive like dumbasses, I seen one almost consume another Jetta this morning.

If decidedly a V8, usually I can tell the brand, so there isn’t any point to this question. If fartcan or I4 noise, Civic. If V6, Accord.

I drive a Patriot. NOBODY revs on me, man.

Good point, but your still making assumptions before looking at the car based on your knowledge of engine noises.
You can seriously tell what car is what (or better, what car is what brand) by just the exhaust note of the V8 inside? I’m not hating, that’s pretty incredible if you can, but I am doubtful of your boast.

In leiu of a motorcycle, I’d say a SN95 mustang

I couldn’t claim 100% accuracy, but V8 noises have a lot of differences between brands. I’d have to say though, they usually fall into groups at first that you can pick apart if you listen hard enough.
LS V8’s are pretty similar to Hemi’s, but when they rev there is a distinct difference. Can’t claim to be 100% accurate between the two, but I can tell if it’s one or the other. Mercedes and Maserati are a very deep, distinct note. Once again they separate when rev’d. Mercedes becomes more sinister, Maserati becomes more musical. Obviously a Ferrari V8 is easy because they use a flat-plane crank. Ford, BMW, and Audi are my grey area. Ford can usually be picked out of that group, and from there I’m stuck.
Of course this is assuming I’m concentrating on figuring it out rather than looking around to see where that awesome noise is coming from :)

I haven’t heard any new ones lately, but the mod motors in Mustangs and the LT? in the Camaros had distinctly different sounds. Mopar didn’t make anything besides the Viper back when I was learning, so it used to be fairly easy to tell. Anything older also sounded different, though I was able to tell it was older, I had a little more trouble id’ing it without looking.
Diesel truck are also sound far enough apart that it’s easy to tell which truck was coming down the road before you saw it.

That ball hitch is enormous.... Maybe it’s for the truck owner’s buttplug or something and not towing things.

My neighbor had the same talent, but with outboard motors. She grew up on a lake and we lived close enough to a river to hear passing boaters.
