Car Related. Personally I am an avid cyclist, but I live in the desert, so for a large part of the year, being a cyclist sucks. Why you ask?
Well in some areas of the country you cant ride in certain times because of the snow or heavy rains. Here, its sunny and clear nearly 365. Why is this a problem.
Go upstairs grab your wife / girlfriend / sister / mother / your hairdryer. turn it on, stick it to your mouth, breathe.
Now imagine doing this same thing while exercising. Not fun.
So a few years back I did what most Americans do around the New Year, signed up for a Gym membership, went for a few weeks, and then just kept an open subscription that I pay for and never use.
The riding season out here is pretty much the winter months, and this past year, I didnt get many rides in due to a change in employment, getting sick multiple times, a death in the family, and a slew of other things that kept me, well, preoccupied. So recently, I’ve been making trips to the gym on my days off.
Now let me explain. I HATE going to the gym. It’s not because of the equipment or the staff or the location or anything other than the d-bag-bro-boys who go there in gym shorts and tank tops with their beer guts hanging out and use every machine incorrectly and then run over to the mirror to flex and check themselves out. It angers me and makes me want to burn small villages on the coast of Somalia.
But recently I’ve noticed an interesting trend. So far Ive seen an 09-10 QP, an AM V8 Vantage conv., a V8 R8, and just today, a lime green Huracan in the parking lot. This tells me there are people at my gym I need to become friends with.
Funny how cars can motivate me to go to the gym more...

You know what’s ridiculous? I hate the physical act of going to the gym. Once I am there and ready to go I love working out, especially lifting weights. But I hate getting there, and also dealing with the terrible locker room at my gym. Seriously, space the damn lockers out a bit.

Wish I could say the same of my gym...
It seems to attract a permanent crowd of Honda Fits with chains hanging from the mirror.

Such a great metaphor.

Yeah, the locker situation at my gym is a bit on the claustrophobic side too. I live pretty close to my gym though so I will usually just go home, change, then go to the gym so I can skip over the tight quarters situation.

Well when I first signed up it was bro-truck city. Whats funny is, they just opened up a Lifetime Fitness around the corner, which is like a super nice center with an indoor rock wall and a full spa, etc. Their baseline membership is $180 a month. I would expect to see these cars there, not at my $40 /mo gym.

I know because its true. I used to love my old job because it flew me all over the country (and sometimes other countries) and anywhere I went I could always get an amazing jog in because I could actually breathe. Here I go a half a mile and half to stop for fear of my lungs igniting.

That and having to take a shower afterward. I hate taking a shower at the gym, but I cannot make myself get in my car when I’m all grubby and sweaty after working out. Thanks, Obama.

Well I got myself some at home gym equipment so that I don’t have to deal with the aforementioned heat and douches.

Cyclists block the roads up mt Tamalpais and it makes me quit mad. I want to pitch them over the cliff into the sea.

I have a full weight room in my house with benches and free weights, I mostly go to the gym for cardio when its too damn hot to do anything outside.

I’ve noticed even people with money see the ridiculousness in some prices and can’t justify paying more for something. Which is funny, because here in this case the guys with the nice cars are going to a cheaper gym, yet they drive cars that are more expensive and giving a more pleasant experience, much like the new gym that’s just opened up near you...they could easily have bought a Camry!

I hear ya. I just seriously hate the action of getting to a gym as well. So I have a Bowflex Treadclimber and a exercise bicycle for the cardio. Although it’s a poor replacement for actually being outside. I prefer hiking myself.

I don’t get to ride mountain or road nearly as much as I’d like, and got a gym membership for the same reason. I also hate going.
There is an upside to your riding at altitude and in heat: you’ll be a beast when you ride closer to sea level. When I go up to the Tahoe area every summer, I feel like I’m dying with every stroke for a couple of days because I’m used to thick air and cool temps.

The gym fucking sucks
Just do push ups, get a pull up bar and go for runs or bike rides
Fuck the gym
Seriously, fuck the gym

I pay $22/month for a barebones gym with lots of lifting junk and a decent cardio setup. So far I have seen a few 996 and 997 911s, viper gts, F-type and few other ‘exotic cars’. Spend that coin wisely!
I refuse to pay $140/month even though I frequent the gym 4-5 days a week.

Noticed you mentioned Lifetime fitness in another comment, that’s where i go. I’d find a cheaper gym but this is so close to my house I can run down there and already be warmed up by the time I’m there. At mine it’s full of new STI’s and modded Evo’s and other cool JDM stuff driven by young guys. Also tons of M3’s and the like. Older guys drive C7’s and the occasional Ferrari or Maserati.
I hoon, therefore I am

Haha, 109 today in Phoenix, and I’m willingly biking (only) 10 miles home on a cheap hybrid (the shimano pedals are probably worth as much as the rest of the bike). There’s something insanely fun about working out outside during the hottest part of the day, in the hottest part of the country.

Also, squats, deadlifts and the rowing erg make you a better cyclist. Funnily enough, of those three, the rowing erg is most frequently used incorrectly.
