Memphis. 93 Degrees. Zero. Shade. Dirt parking (turned to mud after rains the previous night)
In the morning, we ran into a slight hiccup with my dad’s mustang. on startup, it was running stupidly rich and smoking up the whole parking lot. Nothing on the Holley HP EFI system had changed, but for some reason the car was just dumping fuel. Then after 30 minutes of looking at everything, I noticed that the AFR reading to the computer was wack lean (35.6, the max). Bad oxygen sensor, but luckily because the car has one for the computer, and one for a gauge, it was easy enough to jack up the car, and have me swap the connectors. after that, the car ran better than it has in the past few months. Awesome.
By the time we got that fixed however, it was 8:45 and the group left Gateway at 8pm. Interstate it is. Not too bad of a drive, but my god Arkansas and Tennessee had some of the worst condition sections of interstate I’ve ever seen. Concrete laid worse than if Ray Charles had done it.
Then we got to Memphis International Raceway. It was HOT . Lots of sun and no clouds meant the heat was just bearing down on you. Memphis had also had pretty major rains the previous night, so the humidity had risen high as well. Also, the parking for the venue was a dirt lot, with a mud crossing point, and I ended up being the short guy on the totem pole to get stopped in the mud. Luckily I didn’t get stuck, but the open diff made sure I spun a bit and threw some mud onto the area behind the rear tires.
Cleaning the cars up from the road trip sucked. Not because they were tht dirty, but because the sun was beating down on us for so long. Neutrogena Sunscreen FTW. Fluids were the key component of survival. But, because it flat out sucked to be out looking at cars, and because not much showed up besides long haulers, I didn’t take many photos, and for that I apologize.
Activities of the day included a world record burnout attempt (I believe they beat the Summernats record) which put a massive plume of smoke across the entire show. I missed it, but there’s plenty of photos and videos circulating the web.
My dad and i talked to the guys at Holley about his bad Oxygen sensor, to see if they had a spare we could buy. They had the right type for our application (Bosch) and when my dad asked how much we owed them, all we got was “how about a handshake?” Seriously. I have to give a grateful shoutout to the guys at Holley EFI for having THE best customer service available. O2 sensors are not cheap.
After we felt our activities were finished, we headed out to our hotel (our first hotel bumped us out, even after pre-paying for the night) and unpacked. We took showers to get that disgusting feeling of sweat and sunscreen off. And because we were in Memphis, it was time for some good BBQ. We ended up going to Charlie Vergo’s Rendezvous, where I had the best brisket I’ve ever had. That pretty much wrapped up the day.

It was amazingly hot. I haven’t sweat that much in a long time. I took about 300 photos. Great event.
