Beginning of the 3rd summer with this mower so it's relatively new.

I’m afraid the one I use is starting to burn oil :(
Been through tons of abuse... so I figure it was only a matter of time.

Until it blew a hole in the side it didn’t burn any oil. I'm curious as to why it gave up on life. Maybe the thoughts of mowing in the Georgia summer again was too much for it.

It is to small to become a coffee table. Maybe it can be a foot stool.

Time to tear that engine apart for a post mortem analysis!

That’s the plan. Though I don’t if I’ll be able to determine a cause or if I’ll just find “yup that’s broken too”

Take pictures and post them up!
I’m sure with the collective mechanical wisdom of Oppo we can come up with something to blame, or at the very least have fun guessing.
Without any data, I’m gonna go with connecting rod bearing failure caused by clogged oil passages.

Curious, what engine brand was that? I’ve been completely hammering a Honda twin 18hp commercial engine for 10 years now, and that thing still sips gas compared to other comparable engines and keeps going.
For a push mower, you’ll drop $5-700 on a Honda engined unit, but with basic care, they don’t stop very often. (My experience with a 13hp and 18hp units.. my Briggs 4 hp died within a few years. When you have a 365 day growing season, mowers take it in the shorts.)

Briggs. It was one of the cheapest ones at Home Depot. Growing up we never had a similar mower style die. Either I did/didn't do something or it was something wrong with the engine to begin with. I changed the oil according to the instructions with the same oil that came with it.
