Very possibly. I imagine it had soiled its reputation just enough by ‘72 for that to be the case.

The problem is what’s reliable in a 30,000 mile engine test is not reliable in 30,000 real world miles.

Ford and GM’s idea of reliable back then was “does it break down on the way to the dealership?”

That being said, I’d love to retrofit an old maverick with an ecoboost 2.0l engine.

Bizarrely, a vehicle that was quite reliable (unusually so) for the first 60k miles in real world conditions was the AMC Pacer - at least according to a ‘74 (I think) issue of PM and its attendant owner survey. After that point, things were free to get hinky - I know Tina Corbett (sometime Opponaut) had her whole ownership as a horror story, but I think Jonee’s one did fine.

When I first became a conscious human being, both my mother and father had Maverick’s. My mother’s was an orangish four door that her father had bought new shortly before passing. She bought it for a $1 off of my grandmother. My father’s was a hunter green coupe with the V8.

My dad totaled his by hitting a buck at excessive speeds. The other one that had stayed in the family since new finally succumbed to PA road salt sometime around 1989. It was still running okay so maybe that add was onto something.

I had a 73 with the Luxury Decor option, the 302 and just about every option. Bought it in 1978 when I was 18.......might sound kinda dumb, but I really miss that car.
