"KirkyV" (KirkyV)

I’ve discovered yet another contender for my next car, though it’s perhaps a little out of the left field compared to most of the other stuff I’ve looked at. It’s about the size I’m looking for, would offer a substantial performance upgrade over my 106, and I actually quite like bits of the styling—the front’s a mite plain, but the back has a certain appealing chunkiness. As it’s a Suzuki, I have to imagine it’s going to be fairly reliable, too.
Any thoughts?

I like the way they look and heard they’re reasonable enough to drive. Not on the level of the best warm/ hot hatches though. Can’t hurt to test drive one.

Can’t say I’ve ever driven one - the dash is a little crap (as it’s shared with other Suzukis), but I can’t imagine that’s top of your priorities.
Are you sure I couldn’t interest you in an MR2 requiring suspicious amounts of welding instead?

It’s rare, interesting and I like the wheels so I say go for it. The only problem I have with it (and all Superminis) is the whole you either have a boot or rear leg room and either choice will suck.

Ah, its supermini-ness is actually a pretty major plus for me; I love driving relatively small cars. My 106 can fit through all sorts of gaps that most other cars can’t manage.

Or in my case you get neither.

Yeah, the dash isn’t an issue—I drive a Peugeot supermini from the nineties.
I wasn’t aware there was such a thing as an MR2 that didn’t require suspicious amounts of welding. I actually do really like them, particularly the old W10 ‘we just drew a bunch of straight lines’, but the insurance is just too much for my twenty year old self.

Going by Ross Kemp, I thought it had a decent boot.

I’ve heard pretty good things about the way they drive, though the reviews are somewhat inconsistent on that point. They’re incredibly cheap for a warm hatch of that age, too—a similar vintage Fiesta Zetec S will set you back quite a bit more, and isn’t as fast. Still, speed isn’t actually all that high on my list of priorities; I’ll be happy as a long as it’s a few seconds faster than my 106.

Considering where I live they should be really appealing to me but the newer superminis have been to tall for my taste. Plus my knees still hurt from a long trip in a Ka.

Oh, yeah—most newer superminis are too large in general for my taste. The Ka isn’t a comfortable place to be, but it should be said that the original is small even by supermini standards; I’m pretty sure it was classed as a city car, even in the nineties. My 106 has quite a bit more room inside than my sister’s Ka, and an extra seat... And a larger boot, come to think of it. I managed to move to Uni with pretty much all my worldly possessions stuffed in there with the seats down, and I can confirm that it can actually fit its own bonnet fairly comfortably.

I just had a quick look on autotrader and they are quite good value. Most superminis are fun anyway, especially with > 100hp. The reviews are so inconsistent I think only a test drive would help you develop an opinion.
It’s definitely not a bad option.

Fair enough. Generally speaking though, I really like the later Swifts - I had one as a rental the other year and it was great, so if I was going for a Suzuki I’d be looking at a Swift Sport.
Yeah, I looked at an AW11 but it needed too much welding, so I bought an SW20 (albeit for £500, so I can’t really argue) which seems to have rusted just as badly but from the inside out instead of from the outside in, so it turns out it also needs exactly the same amount of welding as the car I’d have rather have bought in the first place. Never mind me, I’m just bitter because I think I got caught by a speed camera in some BS circumstances yesterday :\
Edit: Actually, genuine suggestion; when it comes to having that kind of agile, driving by adjusting where the rear is feeling that you get from a 106, I’d suggest relatively ‘90s Alfas & Fiats.
Edit again: Also, you’re 20? Doing some quick maths makes that terrifying, I feel so old. :(

I’ve only actually seen one in person, and that was fairly recently—I had no idea they even existed beforehand.

That one has the fancy sliding rear seats, mine just has a detachable rear bench which limits boot space a bit more.

Fair enough. The only other Supermini I have been in happens to be a 106 but I wasn’t really paying attention to interior room and boot space on the account of it being stripped out and that I was driving it on an autocross track. I fully get why 106 GTIs cost so bloody much relatively speaking, they are so good.

I want a GTi soooooooo badly, but they’re appreciating like crazy, and cost a bunch to insure. By the time I’m old enough to get a sane quote, I doubt even natty examples will be within my price range.

I remember seeing it first in WhatCar magazine. I quite liked it, a little car with jacked up suspension and 4WD. And then I learned about the Lada Niva and nearly forgot about the Ignis...

I like the Swifts, too, but you can get a decent Ignis for around £1000—even a cruddy Swift Sport’ll run you over £2000.
I think the only MR2 you can reliably expect to find without expensive rust issues is that weird convertible that no one really wants.
I think we’ve all had that feeling a few times. It still hasn’t actually come to anything for me, so here’s hoping you got lucky.

It’s a good example, but fairly pricey - as you’d expect from a dealer, I suppose - and I’d struggle to take advantage of the ‘free MOT for life’, with that garage being around 150 miles away from me. They might be my nearest option for a dealer-insured test drive, though.
I’m all about the dodgy bargain basement examples with dubious stickers and weird ticking noises.

Fuck it, I clearly need to just give up on my silly ideas about ‘Ignis’ and ‘budget’ and just buy this Shagzuki.

Fair enough, I dunno the prices, I just know that I liked the one I drove. I guess I used all my rust luck up when I had some Alfa Romeos a few years back that were pretty much spotless.

True it is priced pretty high. I get very nervous about cars owned by the kind of person who applies monster energy stickers. That’s why I copped out and bought a newish car with service history and warranty from a main dealer.

Shame, are the Saxo VTS prices are going the same way? :(
I guess as they get older the insurance will drop as they won’t be driven by youths saying “watch this!” anymore, so maybe you’ll get lucky on that front and be able to get one before they explode to 205-level crazy-prices.

Saxo VTS prices are sane-r, but it’s much, much harder to find decent examples.
Also... I mean, I know it’d be mostly the same driving experience - I think the only difference between the two, mechanically, is some dampener tuning - but I just like the 106 more than the Saxo. It’s mostly the looks, I suppose.
