So, my dad has been talking about getting my driver’s permit this summer and so eventually I will need a car that I can drive regularly (without pirating the van or the V70). I’m not too excited about my grandma’s Civic (and my dad understands that for once) so I’ve been looking on Craigslist at Volvos. A pretty nice ‘05 V50 came up for around $4500. It has about 149K miles on it and is the lower 2.4i with automagic transmission and looks to be in pretty nice condition, with all the service records reportedly intact. No VIN # or number of previous owners listed, but a clean title is always nice. Any advice for these kinds of cars? (I’m looking to you, EL_ULY...) Are they generally reliable? Problem points?

I’d suggest something like this.

The 2.4 V40 is not a very thrilling car.

Really? My brother has a S40 sedan which is basically the same as this car and his insurance is dirt cheap.

If you can, try to do what Im doing. My truck is registered to my parents and insured to my parents. But they take no responsibility for it, its mine, but on paper its theirs. I pay registration, insurance, maintence, gas, the whole shabang. And it’ll be like that until I’m 25. My parents understand that its too expensive for people my age to pay insurance on vehicles and have been accomodating.

You might be surprised my C30 is cheaper than my Civic was. And the C30 was a coupe that was 5 years older.

If you are going to be looking at a number of cars you can sign up for autocheck unlimited for 1 month and find VINs by the license plate and state.

I was thinking of Saabs but aren’t they generally more likely to break stuff?

The smaller turbos might be as prone to breaking as the V40, the V6 is immensely better.

My wife had an ‘05 S40 with the T5 (2.5 I-5 turbo). One of the only issues we had was a small part related to the turbo. Another was the crankcase ventilation system. Otherwise, it was great, with my biggest complaint being the lack of any reasonable way to create an AUX input. Beyond an FM transmitter, you were cutting wires and soldering in things... yeah for an ‘05 that’s weak. But mechanically the car was pretty near flawless for us, we sold it with 140k, she had it from new.

Is there any way to get a dealer-installed AUX input? I think it would be a good thing to have but not worth too much trouble...

On my wife’s car, there was no dealer option, no after market option. The interface controlled the hvac and other settings, and the cd changer was in-dash. Maybe on a different trim level /different stereo option there would be a way, but not on the one we had. FM was the only way.
