There is a guy on VWVortex selling a set of used Koni coilovers for $350 obo... he says that he thinks one of the rear struts is going and they are missing the rear perches (doesn’t affect ride, new ones are like $50).
How much would it cost to get the rear strut fixed? A new one? Revalve the old one?

Koni’s have lifetime warranties... but it’s only good for the original purchaser. :/
Their prices are typically pretty steep as far as rebuilds and revalves go if it’s not under warranty.

Maybe I could see if he is the original purchaser? And if so, whether he could send them in for a warranty repair? IDK

That would work if he is, but you’d still end up with them without a warranty, which in my opinion is a bit of a risk, they’re not the most robust shocks if you’re going to be putting them through daily abuse.

I’d be putting maybe 5000 miles a year on them for the next 4 years or so

You would probably be fine then, but unless he can get them all squared away for you I would look for something different. I would personally only buy Konis new.

But what about rebuilding them myself? I’ve read that I could buy rebuild kits from Ikon in Australia for like $50 shipped... this just seems like such a good deal :/
If I could get them for $300 shipped and rebuild that rear shock would I have gotten the score of a lifetime?

I’ve never looked into rebuilding a Koni myself, I know that they are generally known to not be user-serviceable though. Special tools maybe? IF you can rebuild it yourself it could be a good deal for sure, but I’d do some research on the difficulty of that first.

Proceed with caution... I bought a used set of suspension with the intent of rebuilding them... the original estimates were 125- 250 per corner.... it ended up costing way more. Granted they were Ohlins, but the point is; with suspension you can never tell what their condition is until they are pull apart. That being said...once they are repaired they will work just as they should. I would also do all 4 corners. or at least have them all inspected. Unless these are run of the mill coilovers, if thats the case its better that you just buy them new, or get STs.

Nice! Gonna try your hand at rebuilding that one?

He said they all have pressure and they should be fine for a few more months, but yeah I’m trying to see what Ikon (in Australia) has regarding rebuild kits
