Archer VS. Aventador - An Exhaustive Comparison

You may say that comparing a small plane with with an high-end exotic is idiotic, but both vehicles are surprisingly similar and are aiming at the same market segment; expensive adult toys.

The Piper Archer and the Lamborghini Aventador are far more similar than you might think. They both cost around $400K, they both have a tendency to burst into flames on impact, they are both expensive to maintain and both are usually driven by people who have no idea what they are doing. Did I mentioned terrible MPG ?

In this comparo, we are going to evaluate both vehicles based on criteria that are valued by their typical owners.

Bling factor :

The lambo is a top-of-the-line sport car, it’s better than 99.8% of sport cars, it’s one of the world’s most expensive car, it’s loud and it really stands out in a parking lot.

The Piper Archer, on the other hand, is one of the cheapest aircraft you can buy and it doesn’t really stands out parked next to an Antonov AN-124.

Opposite gender attraction factor :

Most people dropping $400K on an leisure vehicle are expecting to drop panties as well. Everyone like plane drivers, wether it’s the uniform or the miracle of human flight, or the prospect of joining the Mile-High club, clear advantage to the Piper here.

Comfort :

Gadgetry and mindless vehicular operations are valued by the typical Lambo driver, and Lamborghini is on top of the game here. Automatic transmission, back up camera, sensors everywhere, airbags, high end sound system to cancel the noise made by the engine and whatnot. The piper, however, is much less user friendly. Its cumbersome interior is filled with gauges, knobs, levers and buttons. HF radio and 2 steering wheels, which can be very confusing. Bonus points for the generous greenhouse and the low beltline.

Anventador : 9.0 /10

Bragging rights :

In a world ruled by silly metrics such as the 0-60, the top speed and the MPGs, this comparison wouldn’t be complete without some performance stats and technical data.

The Piper Archer is powered by a 180 hp Lycoming four banger, which is not going to impress anyone in the Gym locker room, but it’s enough to hit 150MPH, but 150MPH into the air.

The Aventador is powered by a powerful V12 engine, acan do 0-60 in less than 3 seconds and hit 217MPH, which is useless because it is meant to travel on public road and must stop at red lights and stop signs.

Anventador : 6.5 /10

Conclusion :

If you have $400K to buy a motor vehicle, the small Piper aircraft and the impressive Lamborghini Aventador are both valuable options, for different reason.
