Car’s a right off.
I manage to do this all the time, but through a regular split ring. I think there are singularities in pant pockets that allow unexplainable things to happen.

Wrong angle of attack I think. Put the ring at the top up against that corner. Then push back on the key and at an upward angle (so exactly opposite of that position).
Or just take the key off the ring. That would probably work too I guess...
