So there is a video making the rounds on Facebook, which I will link below. It is purportedly of a National Carriers truck driver “cutting off” a vehicle attempting to merge onto the highway. However, if you read the comments, and then watch the video, it becomes apparent that the driver of the camera car simply doesn’t understand how to merge onto freeway traffic, and is an idiot for making a big deal about something that was actually his own fault. In the video comments, we see National Carriers themselves responding to comments, saying that they found that their operator was not at fault, etc... it all seems pretty straightforward.
The guy driving the car is clearly a moron. End of story... right?
Well, not so much. Watch the video again... in HD... and fullscreen.
What you see is entirely different. You see a vehicle entering the highway using an on-ramp that
becomes its own lane.
You can see this because the [mostly worn away] dashed lines to the left of the car are normal “this-will-remain-a-lane” lines, and not the short “get-the-fuck-over” lines. And so the car proceeds to continue on to pass the truck on the right, which is never a good idea, but in this situation I can understand why they did so, rather than having to slow down and move across two lanes. In any event, just as they come even with the truck’s rear bumper, the truck puts his turn signal on, and abruptly changes lanes, forcing the camera car onto the shoulder.
Now, we can argue about whether or not the car was a contributing factor, and how they should not have passed on the right, but at the end of the day, this incident occurred because the truck driver did not properly check his mirrors prior to changing lanes. What bothers me most, is that National Carriers seems to believe that their truck driver did absolutely nothing wrong (based on the replies they are giving in the comments section), which means they either didn’t look at the video properly, or didn’t watch it at all!
Watch the video, and tell me what you think!

He’s at fault. He should have merged out behind it, not pass on the damn inside...

Stang,
I don’t think the truck driver was in error. Right of way is given to the vehicles already on the interstate, the car entering the roadway needs to regulate their speed.

Haven’t been able to find it on YouTube. I think the person uploaded it straight to the company’s Facebook page. It’s a public page, though, so while I realize not everyone HAS Facebook, anyone who does should be able to see it.

Sheeple like to jump on bandwagons and ignore the facts. And they just like to be assholes because internet.
That sign at the end of the ramp he was on pretty much tells the story.

Right of way is one thing, but the right of way is for when two lanes (an existing lane, and the on-ramp) are merging. In this case, the truck does not have any right-of-way precedent because the on-ramp is becoming its own lane. There is no need for the truck to move over one lane to the right, and he does not have “right of way” to do so.

As I stated in my description, he wasn’t merging. The entrance ramp becomes its own lane. There is no merge occurring here.

Thx! After watching it, I’m inclined to agree with you. Unfortunately we don’t have solid speed data to work from, but it would seem that the driver of [car] thought they’d speed by on the right and got caught.

Wow great observation, looks like the camera car was in the truck drivers blind spot or truck driver was being a supreme dick.

I found the intersection on Google Maps. I made a mistake, I thought the car’s lane ended in the video. Which it doesn’t, there’s no 2 into 1 situation. You can explore down the road staying in the lane in question.
Truck driver changed lanes poorly, but who knows if he or she even saw the car. Trucker fucked up, intentionally or not.

not the short “get-the-fuck-over” lines.
I’m going to use this term from now on!

I think they’re both a bit at fault. The car driver is an idiot for creeping up the truck’s blind spot like that.
And the truck driver appeared to put on his signal and start changing lanes without checking properly if it was safe to do so.
This also shows why passing on the right is a bad idea.

In which case the truck is obliged to keep the inner lane, correct? Which meant he was likely merging into that lane because the car was sluggish to get past at first? Hard to say.

No, the truck isn’t obliged to do anything other than avoid being in the passing lane. In fact, good practice would be to avoid changing lanes where there is an entrance ramp in case you didn’t see someone join the highway.
