I have R32 Skyline insured with liberty mutual right now and they are just ridiculously expensive. Last time I went shopping I couldn’t find anyone else to insure this car and i’m getting close to having to pay again. Wondering if anyone here has any suggestions on how else would insure this car?

Last time I tried these people, at least who I can recall, would not:

Hagerty - said how many miles i expect to put on is too much.

Progressive - refused to accept a vin they couldn’t put into their software both times i tried.

Esurance - said to check out allstate (they are owned by allstate)

Allstate - said specifically to talk to my local insurer and the people local to me wouldn’t insure it.

To give you an idea of how much it is the car is liability only and i’m paying almost $200 a month.

update: Someone mentioned Geico, I remember them saying know as well but don’t recall why. I’ll try them again.

This seems like a good question for Letters To Doug . However, you do need to look at this from an insurance company point of view. You’ve got a car never sold in the US, not readily available for someone to jam into a computer system, that is over 2-decades old and going to cost and arm and a leg to find new parts or a replacement for it. You also need to figure that with any conventional insurance that doesn’t do agreed value you’re going to get a mere pittance of what the car is actually worth if you total it. I would just go to Hagerty and register it as Historic the way it should be, so you can get the agreed value insurance, or find a conventional insurance provider that will give you an agreed value plan.

Try Grundy - you might have the same problem as Hagerty though. I’ve gotten Progressive to take a non standard vin by faxing them the title confirming that the vin is real. Maybe try them again?

I haven’t tried grundy, i’ll check them out.

I’ll try that with progressive, i didn’t think of asking them to do that.

Hagerty would have been great though, they wanted only $300 for a year.

You DD it? Hagerty would be great if you could keep it in their millage constraints. Buy another car for commuting? Justify it by the insurance money you save.

Well with the parts keep in mind i’m telling them liability only so they shouldn’t factor in. I am not expecting full coverage and I drive it like 3-4 times a month only.

The only thing with Hagerty I COULD use them but sometimes I will drive to Socal or Phoenix which racks up the miles beyond what they would want. It sucks living in Las Vegas. All the “good” events like track days and the better japanese import festivals are in socal or phoenix.

I don’t DD it but I drive to Socal and Phoenix on occasion with it for events and do autocross with it.

I went from 132k KM to 138k KM in about a year doing this.

They wouldn’t insure you for that much? Do they know it’s Kms? I was able to get a quote for 17,000 miles annually and I’m only 18.

Use insurance savings for a tow rig?

It seems as if your use of the vehicle falls within Hagerty’s guidelines. Tell them you’ll drive at most 3,500 miles a year. It’s not like they’re going to come around and check your odometer.

“and going to cost and arm and a leg to find new parts or a replacement for it.”

That should only matter if it’s comprehensive, not liability-only.

Correct, but who drives a GT-R that isn’t going to get comprehensive?

Someone who has the money to go buy another one like it’s nothing if the one they have gets destroyed.

It all comes down to how much the comprehensive costs and how much money someone has.

And if comprehensive isn’t available at all, you basically then have to provide your own comprehensive. Have at least several thousand for doing a repair or to buy a replacement car.

If comprehensive comes in at $10,000/year (for example), I personally would take a pass on it. If the car gets in a collision, then I have to decide whether to fix it on my own dime or dump it and get another one.

I used Geico for my E30 Touring which most of the mainstream companies wouldn’t even touch because it wasn’t “in the system”. Cost my nothing abnormal and they asked few questions. I bet it might be a bit more work for an R32, but I bet they’d work with you and have a shot at being reasonable.

I’ll see what they say. The problem with this car vs that E30 though is japanese VINs are ridiculously short and are nothing like overseas ones and it freaks these people out like they don’t know what to do.

The VIN was the issue with the E30 has, while the same length as US VIN, it has basic structural differences from a US VIN. That’s why the typical routes wouldn’t insure it as the VIN didn’t register in their system as a valid VIN, but Geico went right past it. That said, I think they just ramrodded it through their system as a regular E30 with a small note that it was a German touring model, essentially, so it might be quite different from the R32 which doesn’t have anything close to a US counterpart like the E30T.

I talked to hagerty again and they wouldn’t let me insure it this time because I have a licensed roommate without a car.

Fortunately though Geico insured me for $1000 less than Liberty Mutual did so all’s good now.

Thanks for this thread! I’m hoping to be buying a Skyline this week and was getting crap from everywhere. Called Geico and I’ve got a quote for $23 less than my BRZ is covered at currently.

If you want more than just liability, try getting your car professionally appraised. When i told Liberty Mutual that i had an appraisal for my 1990 GT-R, they were able to insure it as an antique and provide me with comprehensive and collision. Hope this helps.

I also want to note that all classic car insurance companies can be tricky because they have strict guidelines, all of them require the vehicle to be stored in a locked garage.
