When I try to adjust the volume via the buttons on the keyboard I get the “NO” symbol. Does anyone know what’s happening and how to fix it? Thanks!

Is this when your headphones are plugged in?

I had them plugged in, closed the computer, ate some lunch, got back to it and pulled out the headphones.

Is there a red-light on in your headphone jack-hole? On a MBP you just have to reinsert and pull our headphones a few times. My computer does it like once every 6 months.

Mac? What is it connected to? If it’s through HDMI, you can’t adjust volume from the system (I think).

Looks like it has no audio device selected. Mac?

Ok, check your audio port - is there a red light glowing inside?

This has happened to me in the past when the incorrect output device is selected in the audio preference pane within system preferences (mine would always get stuck on LogMeIn Sound Driver). Check your preferences.

Yeah, MacBook Pro. I’m not using an external display currently.

There is not. I just reinserted the headphones, pulled them out and I was able to control the volume once again.

There is no red light. Although, I did do what you suggested and it solved the problem.

That works too - basically there’s a tiny switch inside that jack for the audio out. It should normally be set at the 3 o'clock position but it may have been knocked out of position. I was going to suggest a toothpick or paper clip, but plugging your headphones in and out a few times can sometimes work.

I think you need to change your name to ‘Alex B, breaker of technology’

Seems a little more fitting, no?

Looks like it just didn’t register the headphones coming out and now it can’t figure out what audio device you have. Try plugging in/unplugging the headphones while it’s awake and see if that sparks a change.

Next time this happens check your sound preferences and see if Mute is checked. This happens if the Mac is muted and you put headphones in (and raise the volume) and then pull the headphones out again.

Doubling down on the “Your computer thinks there’s an external sound device” comment.
