Finally got the garage organized! It took me over a week to get it all done. This shelving is pretty heavy duty but is a major pain to assemble. Took me hours upon hours to get it all together.
All that is left is to take a trip to the dump and it’s all done.

Nice shelving!
I gotta tell you I’m not a big fan of those white mirrors.

As a person who only until just recently cleaned out the garage of stuff left by the previous tenant... I know you must be feeling really good right now. Next step: paint the concrete!

The wood is where you permanently mounted the shelving to the wall, correct?
Looks good!

The shelving I got for free. I just had to disassemble it, take it home and then put it all back together.
The mirrors will get painted eventually I just need figure out how to take them off. I think I need to take off the door panel and the bolts are behind it. I have two cans of black rustoleum on standby just for the mirrors I just need to find the time to do it.

YES! A coworker of mine got a section of the same shelving and he thought he was smart by not anchoring it to the wall so he could move if need be. Well guess what! the shelving tipped over on him and it shattered his hip. I got this thing anchored where all 250lbs of me could climb on there and it wouldn’t tip over.
Safety first kids.

Yes I can. This is just the one car bay. I still have the other side of the garage (double door side) that is almost empty that is where the stuff that needs to go to the dump currently is.

We moved in to our current home in I believe September, about 2 months ago I finally decided I had enough with having to stumble through crap that wasn’t even mine and cleaned it all out.
Then in May my wife got a new washer/dryer set - her “laundry room” is the garage and so I wanted to give her a nicer area to put her shiny new washer and dryer in (at least until I’m able to build an area for it inside the house). We ended up painting the walls and floor (with Restore 10x that we got for $10 “oops”) and ended up with this:

If you don’t mind me asking, how expensive was the shelving? Keep up the progress! And pics!

That’s about $2500 bucks of industrial racking that I got for free.
My company bought another company and they needed to get rid of the stuff in the old building. They said if I take it apart and take it home I can have it.
I probably have 10 hours invested in taking it apart and putting it back together again.

Looks great. WE just moved into our house in December, and the lack of garage storage is driving me nuts. Where did you get your racking from? I've looked at the options on Amazon and Home Depot.

There is a screw on the bottom of the mirror base cover, remove that screw, slide the cover up and all three bolts are there. It’s pretty easy to get them off. I like the brushed/stainless style instead of painted but it’s all good.

I tried that and it did not do anything. That’s exactly how I thought they were held on. That’s when I thought they might be attached from inside the door. Are you positive that’s how they go on? If so I’ll try again with a bit more persuasion. I just don’t want to break anything.

Yup there is a Truck in just about every driveway. And I’ll take mine anyday before those new ones. Mine is paid for and I’m not terrified to toss something in the back because “I might scratch it”. This truck is the single most best $2200 bucks I ever spent.

Yeah, the mirrors on my ‘86 were identical. You have to pull it out from the bottom, then slide it up along the tube. The rubber seal on the top should be just flexible enough to let you slide it up. If you get a new replacement it will be more obvious. There’s nothing to do from inside on these.
Luc - The Acadian Oppo

I get you now. I know why it wasn’t working. I undid the screw and then I was trying to remove the whole thing in one shot and not just the bottom cover first.
So you slide up the bottom cover that what is holding the tube for the mirror? is is clipped in some how?
deekster_caddy
> Luc - The Acadian Oppo
06/01/2015 at 12:51 | 1 |
There is a metal tab sticking out of the bracket (that you can’t see) that the screw goes into from the bottom. Once you remove the screw you have to pull the cover out far enough to clear that tab before you can go up. The entire bottom cover is held on by the rubber ring on the top and the one screw on the bottom. No clips. Pull the bottom out, then push/slide up along the tube. If it’s been on there a few years, it probably won’t be easy to pull out the first time.

SWEET! It’s the same color and everything. That is one very cool looking burb. It looks around the same year as mine too. what is it 85-86?
Now I know what black mirrors and wheels will look like. I might even paint my mirrors tonight if I can get them off.

Yeah, an ‘86. I think the color was “Copper”. He was nicknamed Mr. Hanky for looking like poo most of the time... but one tough machine. Never let me down, not once. Unstoppable. I only let it go b/c of the fred flinstone floors...

Luckily in Alberta they don’t salt the roads. I plan on replacing the cab corners this winter then after that she is good as new. This truck is SUPER solid(other than the cab corners).

06/01/2015 at 13:58 | 0 |
Ah, good. Cab corners are a well known soft spot, fortunately if you catch them in time the cancer doesn’t spread. The ‘burb was just rotted up from underneath, I didn’t have the means or know how back then to save it. Even if I did (I sort of do now), it would still be a monumental task to rescue that guy. Basically needed everything from the frame up about 1 foot. Floors, rockers, bed, bottom edges of the doors and tailgate... here’s a much scarier pic that shows it from an angle where you can see most of the visible decay...
Luc - The Acadian Oppo

06/01/2015 at 14:53 | 0 |
Yikes! That’s pretty bad. I’m planning to cut out any thing that has even a rust bubble and replacing it with new metal. By next spring this truck will be 100% rust free.
Right now the cab corners are rotten the rockers have a few bubbles and the lower front fenders as well has some slight bubbling at the very bottom. The bed and floors are 100% mint.
I will place an order with LMC truck parts for new cab corners, rockers & lower front fenders. With this truck I’m not fucking around. I plan on keeping this thing forever so may as well take care of it all at once.

My simple calculation point to the same.
Shelving is worth approx $2500.00.
$2500/10hours labor = $250.00/hour
I don’t normally earn $250/hour therefor this was a great deal.
