Why in God’s name would you want a carbureted engine?

engine swap is easier, I can throw a efi system on from eddelbrock later if I choose

Take 850 Turbo wreck, then use all the computers you need.

Hey, I take offense to that!

[Stalls engine in my pickup]

... Hold that thought.

[Turns key, pumps gas, rides clutch, keeps up throttle at stops]

So anyway

Easier/ cheaper if I start adding power adders if I have complete control of the computer instead of a newer computer I have to get tuned somewhere

There are loads of questions here.

Why inline 5, when the 740 also fits an inline 6?

Why hard-to-source inline engine, when any old US V8 will do?

If you already have the electrical and fuel supply elements of an injection system in place, why do it with a carburetor? Double Webers / Dell’ortos are sporty, yes, but those are also expensive, for that money you could have a programmed engine management. And anyway, for an i5 engine, you’ll use a plenum for a central carb, because how do you get double webers on uneven cylinders? I don’t get this.

However, to answer your question, Audi did make their i5 engine in carb form way back around and before 1980, so if you don’t want to have a special-made induction plenum, you want one of those... if you can get them. Failing that, getting a Volvo i5 from a 850 should be fun, just get a NA version, if you really want it carb’d, because you don’t want to try and make a carb work with a turbo..... just don’t.

Or if you really want this car with a very special engine, get an old jag, pull the XK motor, put two SU-s on that bitch, and be done with it.

The use of straight-five petrol engines in mass production cars only became truly viable with the advent of reliable fuel injection. A five-cylinder engine using a carburetor fuel system has an unavoidable problem in that the length of the inlet manifold between the carburetor varies too greatly between cylinders at the ends of the engine and those nearer the carburetor for reliable and consistent fuel delivery. Using multiple carburetors (two or three) always results in one carburetor feeding more cylinders than the other, which also produces running and tuning problems. In theory individual carburetors could be used for each cylinder, but this approach is expensive and still brings with it the attendant difficulties in balancing the multiple carbs. Multi-point fuel injection circumvents all the above problems by feeding each cylinder individually from a central, single pump. This fueling issue was never present in diesel engines (except the Volvo D5) which used direct injection from the very start, which is why large five-cylinder diesels were commonly seen decades before the type’s adoption for automotive use.

Quoted from Wikipedia. That being said, Volvo’s B520x (early 850) motors used Bosch Motronic fuel injection which is easily modified. I’d recommend going with an 850 unit just for ease of build and reliability.

... why?

I just sold my 1990 760 Turbo wagon, so allow me to be pedantic.

By the looks of it, you have a NA 740. You can easily slap a turbo on it and get close to 200hp.

You can swap in a factory turbo Redblock engine and turbo, and with a K&N drop-in filter (don't do CAI or short-ram, the factory plumbing is surprisingly efficient), a manual waste gate adjuster, 3" cat-back exhaust, you'll be at or over 200hp.

Shop around - I recommend ipdusa.com - and there are kits to easily get to 300hp with the above mentioned mods and more aggressive cams, timing, MegaSquirt, etc.

Getting into more money you can swap in racing-class internals. The block allegedly can take up to around 700hp if properly executed.

If you're set on engine swaps, consider the "White Block" Volvo engines from the last decade. The S60R/V70Rs came with 300hp stock, crammed into a FWD-biased AWD system, so it's relatively easy to pop one into the roomy engine bay of a 7xx/9xx-series Volvo, and wring out gobs more power. Hell, drop in an I6 or the Yamaha V8 from the S80/V70/XC70/XC90.

Of course, there are the tried-and-true American V8 swaps. 302, 351, Fox-body-era 5.0s, Coyote 5.0, the overdone LS swap. Viper V10s. These require a lot bigger budget and a second vehicle to be a DD, of course.

Then there are unusual swaps, like Supra I6s, BMW I6s, V8a, V12a, Jaguar V12s, Nissan Skyline I6s, VQ35/37s, and so much more.

Why do a carbureted I5?!
