I’ll turn 16 in about a week, so I’m coming out of the giant valley that starts at about 11. Yep. My middle school years were awkward.

The giant peak at 18 because de-restricted almost everything. Ya’ know all of those things that you must be 18 or older to do, now you can do them!

And the hippo in the room (A term I use to describe something that is important but ignored, but not as important to be an elephant in the room ) is the general shape of the graph. Up down up down up down up down. Some drops/peaks are understood better than others.

There are numerous formal studies on this. There is a lot of variation across the studies but none that I saw had near the year to year variation that this does. Looking at the Gawker post I’m betting their analysis wasn’t too scientific.
