I found your perfect sports sedan. GM? Check. Fast? Check (0-60 in 6.5), Good Aftermarket? Check. Affordable? Check.
It even has a decent interior!

I know several people who have had reliable GTPs. The most they’ve had to do involved minor mechanical work.

You forgot the biggest point of all, can actually use the back seat as a seat and makes it a functional sedan!

Theoretically, it is. However, for the money he could get from selling it, he could have a reliable, cheap to run W-body.

Remember the Pontiac GXP? I almost forgot they existed until I saw one the other day. What does the GXP and Nissan LeMans car have in common? FWD and wider front tires than rear.
5.3L V8 with 303 hp, 335 ft-lbs and lots of upgrade potential...for power anyway.

I forgot how tiny the E36s were. Another alternative is the Buick Regal GS of 1997-2004. Essentially a better cared-for, sleeper GTP.

I have a GT and the tranny went out at 120ish so I just got a rebuilt one for about a grand and it has been fine ever since. I also have about 220k on mine and everything runs fine!

They’re pretty swell cars. I would have bought one myself, but I decided to go with something a little more 80s.

I had an Impala LS (same engine/trans combo as your GT) and I sold it with 220k on the odometer. Original, non-slipping, non-problematic trans.

I owned 2 of them. Loved those cars to death. I traded the first one away after I couldn’t afford to fix some of the damage from a previous owner. (This one had about 90k and was amazingly fast but really needed some TLC from a previous owner’s accident) The second one I got was in great condition except that the tranny went out at about 150k and I replaced it and the thing ran perfect until I traded it in for my Charger. (The only weird thing about the 2nd one was that it didn’t feel even remotely as quick as the first one)
Both great cars but I loved the color and speed of my first one more:
The parts that were damaged in the accident before I got it were all replaced. It just needed a good alignment, a (matching) wheel and some body work. I started the work on my own and was fairly close but needed something that didn’t need the repair-work.
The second one was red...I’ve never been a huge fan of red but I’ve had 3 red cars...whatever:

Every kid with one thinks its a drag car sent from God, at least around Detroit. At the end of the day its a FWD mid-90s sedan from GM. The only positive I see is thats they’re reliable.

Fair enough. Around here, most people see them as beaters with a bit of power.

Driving wise? Probably. As a normal sedan that can haul four people and a decent amount of stuff in the trunk comfortably? God fucking no. I can’t even get a person in the seat behind me if they have legs. The cars a three seater on a good day . Not to mention any other car short of a race-spec Miata would be more comfortable on the highway.

They’re so fucking small. I’m pretty sure a contemporary Sonic or Fiesta sedan has more room inside.
I’d get a GTP or Impala SS over a Regal GS, too elderly for me.

By all means that sounds good, but here its all this:
There was actually convo on the local Woodward FB group (7k+ members) about importing a R32 Skyline. Not Doug related surprisingly. And people legitimately brought up swapping it with a 3800SC because RB engines are shit apparently.

I always loved the looks and enjoyed the coupe part of my 2. My favorite part of these cars was the HUD. I still miss it to this day. And when it came to speed, they had plenty. They were wide...like really wide and with the 2-door version...getting out of the car became a task at times. The wind caught one of the doors one time and blew it open like a sail, I left a huge dent in the co-worker’s car with a little red to boot. I paid for the dent repair but felt bad either way. They sounded great and there’s nothing like having a SUPERCHARGED V-6. The 3800 engine was the best thing GM ever made and it’s amazing to me that they got rid of the darn things. Handling on these things wasn’t as bad as you’d expect, the worst part is just getting used to the width...did I mention they’re wide? Anyway, I loved them and wouldn’t mind having another one as a third vehicle.
As far as the interior went...I had the (p)leather seats and the heated seat burned through it all and burned a hole in my pants...that was the last time I used the heated seat. Interesting factoid...these only came with a heated driver seat. Heated passenger seat wasn’t an option.

You could almost say you have a compact luxury car thats RWD and the GTP is midsize FWD car.
M5 is the only way to go.

That’s the reason I didn’t buy an E36. That, and the cost of parts. As for the GTP, what do you think of this ?

The parts cost isn’t actually that much worse than any other car, surprisingly.
I’d rather a sedan TBH. Plus, that’s only about half my budget.

My buddy actually has one and the thing sounds pretty awesome! I asked him about the torque steer and he said that it doesn’t bother him at all. The only thing that he doesn’t like is how the engine switches 4 cylinders off when he is cruising down the highway to save gas. With aftermarket exhaust he says it sounds like a helicopter.
