He has really worked on his presence in the intervening years.

Hearing his now-wife talking about “not becoming spoiled brats” really made her sound like... a spoiled brat. He comes off as quite a prick in this video, but I do respect him a lot — he’s a genius and a risk-taker — and it seems like he has a nice family. Love that he made the Model S so that it could have the two jump seats in the back, to fit all of his kids, and that he took a trip across the U.S. in one.

In their defense, I really can’t imagine it being, well, even possible to maintain any sort of perspective resembling that of an average person (or even that of an “average” 1%er) when you’ve got 10 digits to your name. That amount of money is just truly mind boggling. And sort of like you said, you have to respect somebody who can build multiple huge, extremely valuable world class organizations from the ground up. That kind of talent is incredible.
Funny that he did end up being on the cover of Rolling Stone—and many other magazines—as he transitioned from a mere tech millionaire to monumental billionaire. And at least he finally got a jacket that fit!

For sure, but you don’t have to allow yourself to be filmed and interviewed while you have your $1,000,000 car delivered, either. =)
I honestly don’t think the words “not possible” are in his vocabulary.

Yep... that seems so long ago... before Elon got divorced... and divorced again. They looked so happy. But it just goes to show that just because you’re happy today, doesn’t mean getting married is a good idea. And shows that no matter how happy things are today, it doesn’t mean that person won’t lawyer up against you one day in the future. And the more money you have, the worse it gets.
And here are some details over the nutty legal system they had to deal with to get divorced:
http://www.divorcesaloon.com/2010/05/07/cal…
Read all of that and choice statements like:
“ The judge did something so unusual that everyone was blindsided.
He basically instructed my ex-husband’s side to motion for a nonsuit (so unusual in family court they hadn’t thought of it themselves), then granted it and read a massive statement that he had prepared beforehand. In other words, there was no actual trial, and the judge came to court with his ruling already decided. ”
And:
“The judge then made very clear that he would certify the case for immediate appeal and send it up to appeals court,”
And
“ The judge also told my ex in no uncertain terms that he would have to continue paying my legal fees. “
And:
“ This case is far from over,” the judge declared. “Things might not have gone her way today, but the outcome of this case is still unpredictable….and there are” as he stared pointedly at my ex-husband “hundreds of millions of dollars at stake .”
What I see here is the judge deliberately made an initial defective ruling that guaranteed an appeal... and lots of legal fees for everyone earned.
These assholes working in the system deliberately draw out divorces so they get more PR and money for themselves. And they do it by deliberately making “mistakes”.
It’s not the first time I’ve seen it and it doesn’t only happen in the US.
It’s cases like this that made me decide to NEVER get married ever again. It only took one divorce for me to learn. I simply don’t understand why any guy would want to get married again after having been divorced once.
And I’ve even emailed some judges... “congratulating” them and letting them know that the way they handled a given case made me firmly decide never to get married... and that I will use their actions as an example to teach my kids why marriage has become a terrible idea.
I’ve gotten the odd pissy-formal response filled with easy-to-dismiss bullshit that only confirmed their arrogance. With some luck, maybe with enough people like me criticizing those in the legal system for behaving this way, they’ll eventually wake up.
But I’m not holding my breath.

That is very true, there are definitely people who are much more discreet with their money.

It may have been a strategic move of his to get more attention as an “angel investor” or something... Seems like most of his moves are fairly calculated.

Well seeing him so happy with his then-fiance just made me think of my own past. And when I compare the look in his eyes from back then to today, you can tell there’s a difference that was brought on by some hard times.
