There was an interesting exchange between myself and another commenter on the FP that centered around the MB CLA 250. We come in from two completely different backgrounds and desires for vehicles. While I believe my point was lost a bit on the other party, and vice versa, it did make me wonder about Oppo’s new car buying considerations.
I specify new because we all know you would just wait ten years so you can pick up what you want on the cheap anyways:
So, Oppo, where do you stand? I personally would rather spend money on an optioned-up domestic vehicle than the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (just an example) on a base model luxury car. Note: the CLA and Fusion are just examples, not the specific vehicles in this c

I would much rather many other cars before wasting money on a CLA. And I really like Mercs. With proper options the price shoots up to around $40k, for that price I would much rather a CPO E Class or pretty much any other vehicle. If being “cost effective” is my concern the CLA is the exact opposite.
Plus it’s ugly from every angle except the front.

I agree with you 100%.
The exchange I had earlier was funny because it was eerily reminiscent of conversations I have with my friend who seriously likes the CLA 250.

I’d do the Mercedes all day everyday. I would always take a luxury car over a similarly priced normal car.

A case can be made for both. Depends on the specific cars you’re comparing. If we’re talking the Fusion/CLA comparison I’d say Fusion, especially since it’s my understanding that the ~$30k CLAs are pretty rare, and mostly just exist to get people in the door.
A different set of cars or preferences could yield different results though. For example, if you really want a car with solid driving dynamics, it might be worth it to forgo leather and navigation for a solid, well–balanced chassis.

Definitely the Ford Fusion. Give it a Livernois tune and have some god damn fun.

I too have a friend who wants to waste money on a CLA250 and I keep telling him to take his money and get a CPO 3 Series/C Class/A4 instead, he thinks he can get a CLA for around $30k which is bullshit unless you want a base dealer demo.
Plus it’s FWD and has an incredibly cramped back seat. Well optioned CPO E Classes can be had for around low $40ks maybe even high $30k. The materials are better, the car is better put together with nicer options and drives like a proper Merc.

That back seat is ridiculous for me...I couldn’t fit!

Besides, I’d rather have the GLA.

Badge snobbery is a complete waste of money unless of course the main goal of your car is to show off. Which I'm pretty sure it is for a lot of people.

I don’t buy base models.
Not because there’s anything wrong with base models, and not because I want a crazy amount of equipment, but there are a few things here and there that I like that typically are options.
So I just look at what it costs to get a particular car equipped the way I like and decide from there.

^This
For $30k you can get a used C63 AMG.

When shopping, I usually aim for the sweet, creamy middle ground. Almost every car has one - a very nicely optioned, middle of the road trim level that’s priced well below the crazy loaded top line model but has like 90% of it’s stuff for 75% of the price.

Where I live a base model CLA 180 Shooting Brake costs the same as a Mondeo (Fusion) wagon with the
1
.5L ecoboost*, the Titanium trim and no extra options. I picked both as a wagon as sedans don’t make sense to me. Anyway, both offer similar performance. The Ford is obviously larger, and due to the titanium trim has more options.
Given my current situation (no kids) I’d probably pick the CLA. Better size (less whale like), better interior. Probably nicer to drive too. Less practical, but practical enough. Won’t depreciate as fast either, which will compensate potentially higher maintenance costs fully.
If I was paying for it myself I’d get something used.
* The 1.5 Ecoboost is not the base engine, the base engines are the 1.0 Ecoboost and the 1.6 diesel.

I picked the CLA and Fusion just because they were used in my discussion on the FP but I meant in general. Base luxury model X or spec’d up model Y? You highlighted the differences that similar prices bring you and then made a decision...that’s all I was looking for. The engine difference is one of my primary considerations, personally.
