In before modern car visibility causes accidents.

So I was riding on my bicycle to school, doing my usual thing (bit of DnB and coffee to get the blood pumping). Anyway, a guy unexpectedly pulls over for a side street roughly ten meters in front of me. Even though I initiated evasive measurements as quickly as I could, I was not able to slow my bike down in time (I tend to ride quite quickly) and slammed into his front right fender. Well shit. Damage report: Me and my bike were fine, but his car, a Peugeot 2008

Kinja'd!!!

had traces of bike on its fender. Thankfully the driver is a nice guy, and we were quickly able to exchange contact information and go our ways again. We are currently in the process of sorting the insurance stuff out.

So how did it happen? Well I think both of us are to blame for this. I assume I had been in the blind spot of his C/D-pillar at the time he suddenly did the fateful turn so he couldn’t see me approaching properly. I on the other hand was moving at quite rapid speeds, so counting in the reaction time to brake the crash was inevitable. Me having a cup of coffee in one hand really did not help at all either.

Lesson learned: I really need to stop drinking coffee and listening to music while riding a bike.

Indeed. The good kind of Drum and Bass from pre-2006 with some quality Jungle thrown in the mix.

Wait you were on a bicycle, drinking coffee, and listening to music? I hope you only had one bud in. doing all that and riding on roads with vehicles is asking to get hurt, and I say this as someone who has managed to eat a large DQ Blizzard while biking.

Do you have a light on your bike? I have a good friend who crashed into a car that pulled out in front of him just last week. He was not badly injured, but he did not have any lights on his bike, and I wonder if the driver just didn’t see him. I have a very bright blinking light on the front and back of my bike, and I am certain that drivers have seen me, and stopped, because of the light.

I know, I know.

It’s only when things go badly wrong that you realize you’ve fucked up.

I do have lights on my bike. In fact this is the first time in three years that I have a fully road worthy bike. I usually leave it on so I don’t have to switch constantly, but I never really noticed a difference when riding in full daylight.

I only ride in full daylight, and I always use the light. I figure it can’t hurt, and I know that drivers backing out of driveways (I only ride in the neighborhood) have stopped when they see me coming.

Most of the time I prefer to use backroads with low traffic density, but I was late today and the main road is the most direct and quickest way. Turned out my teacher was late so none of this would have been necessary (the riding like an idiot with coffee in one hand).

Not htat it makes a difference but wearing headphones while biking may be be legal. Also you should get a back back with a bladder. Dump the coffee right in there and you have a hose right next to your face whenever you want a sip. Coffee in there might be grose but I do it with water.
