Yes, yes, it’s just a bit late.
Having decided that a Volvo 264 was just too obvious, I’ve found a Messerschmitt 264 Amerika.
Intended for long range use, it was found to be not much good and only three prototypes were made. All were destroyed by bombing.

To me, the “planes that might have been” are often more fascinating than the ones that went into production. I’ve considered doing a series of posts on “aircraft also-rans.” This would make a good candidate.

It was originally intended for long range reconnaissance and then proposed as a candidate for the Amerika Bomber project from which it was later dropped.

I like this idea. The WWII and post WWII era had some awesome planes that could have been great but were too far ahead of their time.
